Characteristics of the Tribe of Gad

[Based on the work ("Shivtei Yisrael") of Rabbi Fishel Mael.]

[Basic Outlines Only for the Present.  At a later date we may add more details. ]

The following notes are derived from the work of Rabbi Fishel Mael. He brings sources for everything said below. Our own understanding and opinion do not necessarily coincide.

The Tribe of Gad

The Tribe of Gad were warriors.
They harmonioulsy combined intellect with physical activity.
Elijah will return and presage the Future Redemption. Elijah comes from Gad.
The Tribe of Gad did not want to enter the heartland of the Land of Canaan. Gad preferred certain attributes that are more pertinent outside of the Promised Land.
Gad was "tam" (from which we have the English word "tame") connoting simplicity, and innocence, but also ingenuity.
Gad may be ranked opposite the warning against bestiality.
Gad has some of the negative and positive qualities of a dog.
A dog is presumptuous and constantly hungry.
Someone who starves themselves is liable to be stricken with jealousy and anger. This can lead to bloodshed. Gad of his own choice had these otherwise negative qualities but could use them in a positive direction. This was seen in the personage of Elijah.
Gad has qualities that, when employed positively, serve as a counterbalance to the depravity of others.
Gad and Reuben complement each other.
The settlement of Succoth was in the territory of Gad. The Feast of Succoth represents the cleaving of Israel to the Almighty. This has a special pertinence for Gad.
