Subject: The Mark of a Lion: Sergeant Thomas Baker, Saipan 1944
BAKER, THOMAS A.
Rank and organization: Sergeant, U.S. Army, Company A, 105th Infantry, 27th
Infantry Division. Place and date: Saipan, Mariana Islands, 19 June to 7
July 1944.
Entered service at: Troy, N.Y. Birth: Troy, N.Y. G.O. No.: 35, 9 May 1945.
Citation: For conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity at the risk of his life
above and beyond the call of duty at Saipan, Mariana Islands, 19 June to 7
July 1944. When his entire company was held up by fire from automatic
weapons and small-arms fire from strongly fortified enemy positions that
commanded the view of the company, Sgt. (then Pvt.) Baker voluntarily took
a bazooka and dashed alone to within 100 yards of the enemy. Through heavy
rifle and machinegun fire that was directed at him by the enemy, he knocked
out the strong point, enabling his company to assault the ridge.
Some days later while his company advanced across the open field flanked
with obstructions and places of concealment for the enemy, Sgt. Baker again
voluntarily took up a position in the rear to protect the company against
surprise attack and came upon 2 heavily fortified enemy pockets manned by 2
officers and 10 enlisted men which had been bypassed. Without regard for
such superior numbers, he unhesitatingly attacked and killed all of them.
Five hundred yards farther, he discovered 6 men of the enemy who had
concealed themselves behind our lines and destroyed all of them. On 7 July
1944, the perimeter of which Sgt. Baker was a part was attacked from 3
sides by from 3,000 to 5,000 Japanese. During the early stages of this
attack, Sgt. Baker was seriously wounded but he insisted on remaining in
the line and fired at the enemy at ranges sometimes as close as 5 yards
until his ammunition ran out.
Without ammunition and with his own weapon battered to uselessness from
hand-to-hand combat, he was carried about 50 yards to the rear by a
comrade, who was then himself wounded. At this point Sgt. Baker refused to
be moved any farther stating that he preferred to be left to die rather
than risk the lives of any more of his friends. A short time later, at his
request, he was placed in a sitting position against a small tree . Another
comrade, withdrawing, offered assistance. Sgt. Baker refused, insisting
that he be left alone and be given a soldier's pistol with its remaining 8
rounds of ammunition.
When last seen alive, Sgt. Baker was propped against a tree, pistol in
hand, calmly facing the foe. Later Sgt. Baker's body was found in the same
position, gun empty, with 8 Japanese lying dead before him.
His deeds were in keeping with the highest traditions of the U.S. Army.
4. The USA in Iraq: Foretold in Prophecy?
Micah foretold that the Lost Tribes would return to the Land of Israel via
Northern Iraq
[Micah 7:12] IN THAT DAY ALSO HE SHALL COME EVEN TO THEE FROM ASSYRIA, AND
FROM THE FORTIFIED CITIES, AND FROM THE FORTRESS EVEN TO THE RIVER, AND
FROM SEA TO SEA, AND FROM MOUNTAIN TO MOUNTAIN.
<<AND FROM THE FORTIFIED CITIES, AND FROM THE FORTRESS>>: The Hebrew
translated as "THE FORTIFIED CITIES" is "ari Matzor" and the word
translated as FORTRESS is "Matzor". This word "Matzor" can indeed mean
fortress or when used as an adjective "fortifed" but it can also refer to
an area in the northwest of present-day Iraq, i.e. Eastern Azerbaijan and
Kurdistan.
<<EVEN TO THEE FROM ASSYRIA>>: The Commentaries seem divided on this.
ALL AGREE however that FROM ASSYRIA means the return of those exiled to
Assyria, i.e. the Lost Ten Tribes.
[Micah 7:13] NOTWITHSTANDING THE LAND SHALL BE DESOLATE BECAUSE OF THEM
THAT DWELL THEREIN, FOR THE FRUIT OF THEIR DOINGS.
The non-Israelite peoples who they will dispossess will have made was once
a fertile land into a desert by cutting down trees and overgrazing with
goats and general self-destructive behavior.
The Israelites will have to rehabilitate the land at first (as the Jews in
Israel have begun to do in part) and after that God will help them
supernaturally.
[Micah 7:14] FEED THY PEOPLE WITH THY ROD, THE FLOCK OF THINE HERITAGE,
WHICH DWELL SOLITARILY IN THE WOOD, IN THE MIDST OF CARMEL: LET THEM FEED
IN BASHAN AND GILEAD, AS IN THE DAYS OF OLD.
<<BASHAN AND GILEAD>>: Mean the present-day regions of Syria and Jordan.
Zechariah 10;10 says that Ephraim will possess Lebanon and Gilead meaning
Lebanon and Syria! These areas actually also include parts of Turkey and Iraq.
[Micah 7:15] ACCORDING TO THE DAYS OF THY COMING OUT OF THE LAND OF EGYPT
WILL I SHEW UNTO HIM MARVELLOUS THINGS.
The midrash says that this refers to the Messiah son of David and that the
future redemption will be accompanied by miracles.
[Zechariah 10:6] AND I WILL STRENGTHEN THE HOUSE OF JUDAH, AND I WILL SAVE
THE HOUSE OF JOSEPH, AND I WILL BRING THEM AGAIN TO PLACE THEM; FOR I HAVE
MERCY UPON THEM: AND THEY SHALL BE AS THOUGH I HAD NOT CAST THEM OFF: FOR I
AM THE LORD THEIR GOD, AND WILL HEAR THEM.
This is the re-union of the Lost Ten Tribes with Judah. Joseph and Judah
will re-unite/
[Zechariah 10:7] AND THEY OF EPHRAIM SHALL BE LIKE A MIGHTY MAN, AND THEIR
HEART SHALL REJOICE AS THROUGH WINE: YEA, THEIR CHILDREN SHALL SEE IT, AND
BE GLAD; THEIR HEART SHALL REJOICE IN THE LORD.
[Zechariah 10:8] I WILL HISS FOR THEM, AND GATHER THEM; FOR I HAVE REDEEMED
THEM: AND THEY SHALL INCREASE AS THEY HAVE INCREASED.
[Zechariah 10:9] AND I WILL SOW THEM AMONG THE PEOPLE: AND THEY SHALL
REMEMBER ME IN FAR COUNTRIES; AND THEY SHALL LIVE WITH THEIR CHILDREN, AND
TURN AGAIN.
[Zechariah 10:10] I WILL BRING THEM AGAIN ALSO OUT OF THE LAND OF EGYPT,
AND GATHER THEM OUT OF ASSYRIA; AND I WILL BRING THEM INTO THE LAND OF
GILEAD AND LEBANON; AND PLACE SHALL NOT BE FOUND FOR
THEM.
Egypt and Assyria could apply to areas in Europe, as we have explained
elsewhere. The exiles of Israel will leave these areas.
Gilead means Syria and Lebanon means Lebanon. These areas will be
re-populated by the Lost Ten Tribes represented by Ephraim.
[Zechariah 10:11] AND HE SHALL PASS THROUGH THE SEA WITH AFFLICTION, AND
SHALL SMITE THE WAVES IN THE SEA, AND ALL THE DEEPS OF THE RIVER SHALL DRY
UP: AND THE PRIDE OF ASSYRIA SHALL BE BROUGHT DOWN, AND THE SCEPTRE OF
EGYPT SHALL DEPART AWAY.
Extract from Ephraim, chapter six.
* Jerome on [Zechariahariah 10;11: "And he shall pass through the sea..." :
"The Hebrews say that the Assyrians and Chaldeans took the Jews into
captivity not only to Persia and Media but also to the Bosporus and the
north; and at the end of days God in his mercy will call them back from there:"
By "Jews" taken into captivity by the Assyrians Jerome is actually
referring to Israelites from the northern Ten Tribes even though strictly
speaking these were not "Jews" which appellation refers to Judaeans from
the southern kingdom dominated by Judah.
Taken the above notes together we have the following possibility.
The Lost Tribes led by Joseph defeat all their enemies.
They begin their return to the land via Northern Iraq.
They begin their re-unification with Judah.
They settle in Syria and Lebanon and rehabilitate those areas.
The Messianic Era unfolds.
This is a possibility. It may not happen in this way. Or it may be a
prelude, a rehearsal, or something else OR THE REAL THING.
At all events we can see now before our very eyes how events that the Bible
described could occur quite quickly in our time.
