1. Question About Dinah and Asenath.
K wrote:
Re
Characteristics of Joseph.

Osnath was the daughter of Dinah? I thought Dinah was daughter of David....and the schekem incident was with David's sons after the rape of their sister by schekem
How could that happen before David was was Even born?

Does not make sense

Shalom

Brit-Am Reply:

You apparently have confused Dinah daughter of Jacob  (Genesis 34:2) with Tamar daughter of David.
Tamar was the daughter of David. She (like Dinah) was also a victim of rape (2-Samuel 13:14).

Osnath (Asenath) was the daughter of Potiphar according to the Bible.
cf.
Genesis 41:
45 And Pharaoh called Joseph's name Zaphnath-Paaneah. And he gave him as a wife Asenath, the daughter of Poti-Pherah priest of On. So Joseph went out over all the land of Egypt.

A  Midrash (Midrash Pirke De-Rabbi Eliezer) makes her out to be only the adopted daughter of Potiphar and the natural offspring of Dinah and Schechem.

As for Dinah being the daughter of Schechem or of Potiphar we ourselves would tend towards Potiphar since we interpret the Bible as literally as possible
when possible. It does not really matter.
The Midrash does not have to be accepted literally.
Even if we do not accept the Midrash literally we may view it as representative of a general principle.
Joseph himself is lost and exiled but he rises to power and uses his position to gather in the lost pieces, to heal and unify.
That is the main point.

2. Question From Germany Regarding German Ancestry and Esau.
Extracts:
My relatives are not at all interested in this research. The main reason is that somebody told them that we are the descendants of Esau, the red and wicked one.
Other relatives in USA, France, Scotland..... I love Israel immensely... I want to know if my ancestors really were the descendants of Esau..W.

Brit-Am Reply:
We can only tell you what we know and understand at present.
You do not have to accept it. If we say something your inner instinct rejects then research further.
Most Israelite peoples passed through Germany. So did many Jews. We believe that most of them moved out.
In demographic studies drastic changes do occur.
It is also quite clear that much Israelite stock may well still be found in Germany.
It is however submerged in the general mass. It is not the dominant element as far as we can tell anywhere in any way.
I think most Germans of Israelite descent would agree with this description.
We do not say that all Germans descend from Edom-Esau. We are however of the opinion that at significant moments in history the Esau contingent took charge.
There is also nothing necessarily wrong with Esau.
Many of the great men of world history possibly descend from Esau.
Many Israelites in the USA and elsewhere had ancestor who came from Germany.
Some of  my own ancestors were Jews from Germany and also maybe through ancestors of my grandmother on my father's side non-Jews as well.
Everyone is responsible before the Almighty to do as well as they can with what they have.
God made you as you are and therefore gave you the ability to deal with it whatever it may be.
If you feel drawn to these studies concerning the Ten Tribes it probably means that your ancestors came from Israel.
We have seen many proofs of this in other cases.
Follow our Brit-Am studies, learn the Bible, this definitely can help. It is a beginning.
We ourselves cannot help you with your individual family names but that is one possible pathway you might be able to follow up on elsewhere.
DNA tests can be confusing and even misleading but they are also an option.
Here too however we cannot give any advice. Nor will we be able to discuss the results with you.
This is not our field.
You mentioned the fact that some of your relatives have red hair. You also correctly recall that red hair was a characteristic of both David and Esau.
Red hair is not uncommon in Germany but not so long ago it was widely considered by the Germans themselves to indicate Jewish ancestry.
God bless you

All truth passes through three stages: First it is ridiculed.
Second, it is violently opposed.
Third, it is accepted as being self-evident.
