1. Brian Sandridge: Linguistic Evidence.
Hi, In re: linguistic evidence, I had kept a notebook in Israel last summer for the Ulpan (Hebrew Class) I was taking.  I collected about maybe about a dozen words that seemed to have gone from Hebrew into English, without passing through either Germanic or French.  But, I am still looking for the notebook.
As I recall one or two I will send them.
One I recall is the British cockney slang "Guv'ner".  Like 'ello guv'nah 'ow's it goin'?  I just presumed this was a corruption of "governor".  But when I learned the Hebrew word for a man or men as "gevar" or "gevarim", I wondered.  Love is from the lev, (heart).  Believe, also from the heart.  Bet lamed vav.  I have to find that notebook!
Brian.

2. Relative Intellectual Levels in Biblical Times?

A said:
You have quite rightly rebuked me in the past regarding proselatising, I have to admit I had to look the word up to find out what I was being accused of.  I therefore smile when you refer to those of Joseph as being illiterate and maybe less well educated.

From the information on your site and some further Bible study I do accept the position of Judah that G-d has ordained a path for you and it is imperative that you must follow it.
The same is true for Joseph.

Brit-Am Reply:
Regarding relative degrees of ignorance etc, I think you are referring to our analysis of the situation at the time the Israelites were exiled.
This is partly guess work but it is consistent with the opinion of present-day researchers.
The People of Judah were not necessarily at much of a higher level at that time.
They did however retain their identity and from time to time intensified Torah learning which left its influence.

The Ten Tribes on the other hand from an initial low level were exiled and moved from place to place, subject to foreign influences, pagan cultures, and the exigencies of survival. They quickly lost the little they did have.
To understand how they could loose their identity we should realize that so did every other exiled body of people apart from the Jews!
They may not have been that conscious of their Israelite ancestry even before their exile!!
