1. Benjamin Fourie: South Africa and Afrikaans

Hello Yair

I haven't read your site for a few years and came back to it tonight. I notice that there is more info about the Huguenots and Afrikaners. A neglect of problems in cities was a mistake of the old regime...

An interesting fact is that a South African Jewish poet, Olga Kirsch, returned to Israel in 1948, where she wrote poetry in Afrikaans for forty years (more or less the same time that the Afrikaner Nationalist Party ruled the country). Then, the composer Jeanne Zaidel-Rudolph was born in 1948 (I recorded a work of her named Three Dimensions, in which a fourth dimension and freedom in space and time is suggested in the third section).

Perhaps the feminine in human psyche reached spiritual, messianic maturity in the lives of these two ladies.

At the moment I am performing piano music by Peter Klatzow, based on, amongst others, a poem by DJ Opperman, that deals with the death of Gideon Scheepers, who invaded the Cape Colony following Britain's Scorched Earth and Concentration Camp policy during the Anglo-Boer War. He was caught and shot. The poet refers to Ezekiel 37 in the poem, "Gebed om die Gebeente" (Prayer for the Bones).

Best wishes

Benjamin Fourie

2. Was Asanath Wife of Joseph really an Egyptian?
Subject: Asanath
Asnath the daughter of Potiphar was actually an adopted daughter
who was from the family of Yackov. She was also a relative of Joseph
prior to their marriage.

Sincerely,
D Stone

Shalom,
If you go to the Brit-Am website and enter Asenath in the Search Engine for our site:
http://www.britam.org/SearchEngines.html
you will find that this question has come up several times before and indeed aroused some vehement reactions.
Jewish Rabbinical Legend (e.g. Midrash Pirke De-Rabbi Eliezer) said that Asenath (in Modern Hebrew "Osnat") was the daughter of Dinah who had been raped by Shechem the son of Hamor the Hivite (Genesis ch.34).

For the viewpoint of a modern apologist in favor of this legend see:
Jacob's Seventieth Descendant by John P. Pratt
http://www.meridianmagazine.com/
sci_rel/000818answer.html

Jewish traditions are in fact the only source we have to this effect since the Bible says nothing of the sort!
Brit-Am is all for Ephraimites and other adopting Jewish traditions and taking Rabbinical opinion seriously.
Very often we find the Rabbinical explanations to fit the Hebrew text and solve problems very well.
Nevertheless even  observant Jews are only obligated to follow the Sages in matters of Law.
In accordance with another aspect of Rabbinical Thought we endeavor to understand Scripture as literally as possible.
Asenath, in our opinion, appears to have been an Egyptian woman.

Genesis 41:45
And Pharaoh called Joseph's name
Zaphnath-Paaneah. And he gave him as a wife Asenath, the daughter of Poti-Pherah priest of On. So Joseph went out over all the land of Egypt.

 Concerning the identity of Poti-Pherah priest of On.
His name is practically the same as that of Potiphar who had been the first Egyptian master of Joseph.

Genesis 39:1 Now Joseph had been taken down to Egypt. And Potiphar, an officer of Pharaoh, captain of the guard, an Egyptian, bought him from the Ishmaelites who had taken him down there.

The Sages indeed did say that "Potiphar, an officer of Pharaoh" and  "Poti-Pherah priest of On" were one and the same person.
Be that as it may It is interesting to speculate as to the what kind of Priest Poti-Pherah was.
Did the Egyptians at that time practice some kind of monotheism?
If so, it could throw light on how Joseph was enabled to carry out the policies of Pharoah even when these involved religious scruples.

Genesis 47:22 Only the land of the priests he [Joseph] did not buy; for the priests had rations allotted to them by Pharaoh, and they ate their rations which Pharaoh gave them; therefore they did not sell their lands.

Anyway we all have our motivations.
The Sages (or rather some of them) we assume to have been motivated by the need to account for the rest of the life of Dinah after the rape by Schechem son of Hamor.
After all Dinah was part of the family of Jacob and it would not be fair that they all father Tribes while she seems to have been forgotten about.
Also (as the article by John P. Pratt quoted above points out) there are a few other questions that Dinah linking up to the family of Joseph could solve.
One of these questions (that Pratt does not mention) involves a suggested connection of the Tribe of Joseph with the area of Schechem even before the Israelites conquered the land in time of Joshua.
Some Ephraimites on the other hand seem to have an aversion based on racial tension to the idea that the mother of Ephraim and Manasseh was of Egyptian origin. For all we know some of the Sages may also have felt the same way.
I personally fail to see why ancestry from Hamor the Hivite-Canaanite should be preferable to that of an Egyptian dignitary.
Also, we are commanded to accept the descendants of an Egyptian who wishes to join himself to Israel.

Deuteronomy 23:
7 You shall not abhor an
Edomite, for he is your brother. You shall not abhor an Egyptian, because you were an alien in his land.
8 The children of the third generation born to them may enter the assembly of the LORD.

Anyway this is the Bible and Bible learning and we should all strive to reach the best comprehension of it that we can.

4. David Bell: Welsh Stick Language is Pure Hebrew!

#2. Rob John: The Word "Hail" does not derive from the Hebrew "Halel"!
http://britam.org/now2/1516Now.html#Rob

Yair, many of the WORDS in English have Greek or Latin origins. However, much of the GRAMMAR  still retains its Hebrew origins. In fact, there is an ancient Welsh language ( commonly called a stick language) which is pure Hebrew. That is, both written and spoken. It almost died out by the 17th century, but has been revived. Brit-Am Reply:
We do not known anything about the stick language you refer to. Welsh as well as Scottish and Irish Gaelic definitely do have a Semitic sub-stratum
consistent with their ancestors once having used Hebrew as their tongue tongue.

Yair, excellent response to Rob John. Great explanation. He is a prime example of someone who has been indoctrinated by the present brainwashing in schools and universities that teach history entirely from a Greco-Roman slant. He has likely never heard of Parthia; he has likely never read about how Carthage bullied Rome; he certainly has no idea of the expanse of the Phoenician alliance worldwide, Israel under David and Solomon being its head. You are absolutely right in saying the Hebrew origin of English words isn't even considered because it's thought of already as preposterous. Your explanation of the derivative of hail from halel is good, especially in light of the constant contact between the British Isles and Israel in ancient times.

Good Day, Yair Davidiy and Brit-Am
Fortunately the Roman Barbarians were kept out of Scandinavia. When Yair Davidiy explains the language connections between Hebrew and English, we Scandinavians from the "flock" understand it very well because our languages are very similar to English.

7. Hosea 2
Judah is exhorted to recognize the Lost Ten Tribes as their kith and kin. The Righteous amongst the Ten Tribes are urged to remonstrate with their "Mother" meaning their community. We cannot disconnect ourselves from our peoples. Our "legitimacy" depends on their behavior as well as our own. The Lost Tribes will have enjoyed great wealth and material prosperity much of which will have been wasted due to idolatrous and ungodly practices. They will have worshipped the "baal". Baal worship in Ancient Times was indeed practiced throughout much of Western Europe. Britain was referred to as the "Honey Isle of Bel". The Israelites will be lured out into the "Wilderness" and there they shall be reformed and reconciled with the Almighty.

Hosea 2

 1 Say to your brethren, "My people,"
      And to your sisters, "Mercy is shown."

 2  Bring charges against your mother, bring charges;
      For she is not My wife, nor am I her Husband!
      Let her put away her harlotries from her sight,
      And her adulteries from between her breasts;

3 Lest I strip her naked
      And expose her, as in the day she was born,
      And make her like a wilderness,
      And set her like a dry land,
      And slay her with thirst.

4  I will not have mercy on her children,
      For they are the children of harlotry.

5 For their mother has played the harlot;
      She who conceived them has behaved shamefully.
      For she said, "I will go after my lovers,
      Who give me my bread and my water,
      My wool and my linen,
      My oil and my drink."

6   Therefore, behold,
      I will hedge up your way with thorns,
      And wall her in,
      So that she cannot find her paths.

 7 She will chase her lovers,
      But not overtake them;
      Yes, she will seek them, but not find them.
      Then she will say,
    "I will go and return to my first husband,
      For then it was better for me than now."

 8 For she did not know
      That I gave her grain, new wine, and oil,
      And multiplied her silver and gold,
      Which they prepared for Baal.

 9  Therefore I will return and take away
      My grain in its time
      And My new wine in its season,
      And will take back My wool and My linen,
      Given to cover her nakedness.

10 Now I will uncover her lewdness in the sight of her lovers,
      And no one shall deliver her from My hand.

11 I will also cause all her mirth to cease,
      Her feast days,
      Her New Moons,
      Her Sabbaths,
      All her appointed feasts.

12  And I will destroy her vines and her fig trees,
      Of which she has said,
      "These are my wages that my lovers have given me."
      So I will make them a forest,
      And the beasts of the field shall eat them.

13 I will punish her
      For the days of the Baals to which she burned incense.
      She decked herself with her earrings and jewelry,
      And went after her lovers;
      But Me she forgot, says the LORD.

14 Therefore, behold, I will allure her,
      Will bring her into the wilderness,
      And speak comfort to her.

15  I will give her her vineyards from there,
      And the Valley of Achor as a door of hope;
      She shall sing there,
      As in the days of her youth,
      As in the day when she came up from the land of Egypt.

16 And it shall be, in that day,
      Says the LORD,

      That you will call Me "My Husband,"
      And no longer call Me "My Master,"

17 For I will take from her mouth the names of the Baals,
      And they shall be remembered by their name no more.

 18 In that day I will make a covenant for them
      With the beasts of the field,
      With the birds of the air,
      And with the creeping things of the ground.
      Bow and sword of battle I will shatter from the earth,
      To make them lie down safely.

19  I will betroth you to Me forever;
      Yes, I will betroth you to Me
      In righteousness and justice,
      In lovingkindness and mercy;

20 I will betroth you to Me in faithfulness,
      And you shall know the LORD.

21 It shall come to pass in that day
      That I will answer, says the LORD;
      I will answer the heavens,
      And they shall answer the earth.

22 The earth shall answer
      With grain,
      With new wine,
      And with oil;
      They shall answer Jezreel.

23 Then I will sow her for Myself in the earth,
      And I will have mercy on her who had not obtained mercy;
      Then I will say to those who were not My people,
      "You are My people!"
      And they shall say, "You are my God!"
