1. TRL : Would Joseph Have Remade His Garment?
Re Brit-Am Now no. 1437

Unless Yosef had someone in Egypt make a replica of his 'multi colored coat' he would not have had it with him (torn/blood and returned to his father).

2. Bob Davis: The Statue of Joseph
RE: Brit-Am Now no. 1436

Dear Yair
An interesting discussion about Joseph's coat.  Here is an article about a smashed statue found in a tomb in Goshen that may be of Joseph.  The statue shows a "coat of many colours", and it has stripes! As such it is beleved to be unique in Egypt.

This is a picture of the reconstructed statue

Brit-Am Reply:
Thanks for the links. The basic information that you supplied had already been given in our article:
The Tartan Coat of Many Colors and Joseph (page 2)
http://britam.org/tartan2.html
Apparently not all of you are reading these about articles Scottish Tartan and the Coat of Joseph which is a pity since the information is of value and of interest and the illustrations are both aesthetically pleasing and informative.

3. Does Brendan Mean "Son of Dan"?

Were or are the Danites Jews or Israelites? I get confused with this... Apparently, my name might have come from Bar-Am-Dan (son or people, of the tribe of Dan) which morphed into the irish/english Brandan/Brendan/Brandon then some of their descendants migrated to Portugal and the name was adapted to portuguese as Brandao. I would love to hear anything you may have on the history of my family name.

Thank you.

Brit-Am Reply:
Shalom,
The Tribe of Dan is one of the Twelve Tribes of Israel. They were one of the Ten Tribes who went into Exile.
Technically they are not "Jewish" since the term "Jewish" applies to descendants of the Kingdom of Judah who kept the Mosaic Faith which today is known as Judaism. The Jews are part of the Israelite nation which however includes other groups in addition to the Jews.
The Tribe is another part of the Israelite Nation.
They are not Jews.
The problem is that in popular terminology and in the eyes of most people Israelites and Jews are one and the same.
One therefore sometimes find expressions concerning the Lost Tribes as "The Lost Ten Tribes of Jews".
This is mistaken but is to be treated with understanding.
As for "BrenDan" meaning "Son of Dan" this is interesting.
Unbfortunately we cannot help concerning your family history.
We can only invite you to stay with us and follow developments.
May the God of Israel be with you

4. Cathy:  Thank You for Your Research
I have just read your book "Origin" and found it enthralling. Probably because I am quite possibly one of a mighty throng of descendants of the 10 tribes of Israel. I was blown away to realise that I could be descended from 4 different lines.

I don't know if this is boring to others. You must have heard this sort of story so many times already. You tho' must feel my excitement . Everyone in my family thinks I'm a "nutter".

Having read your newsletters, I was amazed to find that the chance of my being descended from the Israelites were pretty strong. My maiden name was B, my Dad's family 'looked ' Jewish. My paternal grandmother was a Chandler and her ancestors came from Saltlake city in Utah . They were Mormons. On my mothers side her grandmother was Irish and a Gannon(spelling?) . She was married to a Welshman . The surname was Gwyn.

This may have nothing to do with anything. However, it is all new to me and I am very excited.

All of this shows me the possibility of why I am so drawn to Israel and love my Jewish friends so much. I "Feel" so much a part of them. Whenever I see a possibility to go to Israel, I begin to plan and things simply slide into place. Oh yes and J. is a friend and feels much the way I do. We are members of WIZO and proud of it.

If you are still reading - Thank you for listening. Thank you for your research and for sharing it with all of us. Now The Punch Line - at last. Please add me to your e-mailing list.

May The Lord richly bless you

Cathy

5. Proverbs 21 (New King James Version)
http://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Proverbs+21&version=NKJV

 1 The king's heart is in the hand of the LORD,
      Like the rivers of water;
      He turns it wherever He wishes.
       2 Every way of a man is right in his own eyes,
      But the LORD weighs the hearts.
       3 To do righteousness and justice
      Is more acceptable to the LORD than sacrifice.
       4 A haughty look, a proud heart,
      And the plowing[a] of the wicked are sin.
       5 The plans of the diligent lead surely to plenty,
      But those of everyone who is hasty, surely to poverty.
       6 Getting treasures by a lying tongue
      Is the fleeting fantasy of those who seek death.[b]
       7 The violence of the wicked will destroy them,[c]
      Because they refuse to do justice.
       8 The way of a guilty man is perverse;[d]
      But as for the pure, his work is right.
       9 Better to dwell in a corner of a housetop,
      Than in a house shared with a contentious woman.
       10 The soul of the wicked desires evil;
      His neighbor finds no favor in his eyes.
       11 When the scoffer is punished, the simple is made wise;
      But when the wise is instructed, he receives knowledge.
       12 The righteous God wisely considers the house of the wicked,
      Overthrowing the wicked for their wickedness.
       13 Whoever shuts his ears to the cry of the poor
      Will also cry himself and not be heard.
       14 A gift in secret pacifies anger,
      And a bribe behind the back,[e] strong wrath.
       15 It is a joy for the just to do justice,
      But destruction will come to the workers of iniquity.
       16 A man who wanders from the way of understanding
      Will rest in the assembly of the dead.
       17 He who loves pleasure will be a poor man;
      He who loves wine and oil will not be rich.
       18 The wicked shall be a ransom for the righteous,
      And the unfaithful for the upright.
       19 Better to dwell in the wilderness,
      Than with a contentious and angry woman.
       20 There is desirable treasure,
      And oil in the dwelling of the wise,
      But a foolish man squanders it.
       21 He who follows righteousness and mercy
      Finds life, righteousness, and honor.
       22 A wise man scales the city of the mighty,
      And brings down the trusted stronghold.
       23 Whoever guards his mouth and tongue
      Keeps his soul from troubles.
       24 A proud and haughty man, "Scoffer" is his name;
      He acts with arrogant pride.
       25 The desire of the lazy man kills him,
      For his hands refuse to labor.
       26 He covets greedily all day long,
      But the righteous gives and does not spare.
       27 The sacrifice of the wicked is an abomination;
      How much more when he brings it with wicked intent!
       28 A false witness shall perish,
      But the man who hears him will speak endlessly.
       29 A wicked man hardens his face,
      But as for the upright, he establishes[f] his way.
       30 There is no wisdom or understanding
      Or counsel against the LORD.
       31 The horse is prepared for the day of battle,
      But deliverance is of the LORD.
