2. Odoacer. Barbarian King of Italy.

Odovacar/Odoacer...it is said that he was buried beside a Hebrew Synagogue...
According to the sources he was the leader of warrior groups made up mostly of Heruls and Rugians, while his father was 'of the tribe of the Thuringians and his mother was of the tribe of the Scirians". All the names in his family, viz. Edika, Onulf, Sunilda and Thela, are Germanic.

Odoacer was the German commander of the Roman army who deposed the last Roman emperor (476) which meant that the Western Roman Empire ceased to exist.

Extracts:
Odoacer (or Odovacar), the first barbarian ruler of Italy on the downfall of the Western empire, was born in the district bordering on the middle Danube about the year 434. In this district the once rich and fertile provinces of Noricum and Pannonia were being torn piecemeal from the Roman empire by a crowd of German tribes, among whom we discern four, who seem to have hovered over the Danube from Passau to Pest, namely, the Rugii, Scyrri, Turcilingi and Heruli. With all of these Odoacer was connected by his subsequent career, and all seem, more or less, to have claimed him as belonging to them by birth; the evidence slightly preponderates in favor of his descent from the Scyrri.

His father was Aedico or Idico, a name which suggests Edeco the Hun, who was suborned by the Byzantine court to plot the assassination of his master Attila. There are, however, some strong arguments against this identification. A certain Edica, chief of the Scyrri, of whom Jordanes speaks as defeated by the Ostrogoths, may more probably have been the father of Odoacer, though even in this theory there are some difficulties, chiefly connected with the low estate in which he appears before us in the next scene of his life, when as a tall young recruit for the Roman armies, dressed in a sordid vesture of skins, on his way to Italy, he enters the cell of Severinus, a noted hermit-saint of Noricum, to ask his blessing. The saint had an inward premonition of his future greatness, and in blessing him said, "Fare onward into Italy. Thou who art now clothed in vile raiment wilt soon give precious gifts unto many."

Odoacer was probably about thirty years of age when he thus left his country and entered the imperial service. By the year 472 he had risen to some eminence, since it is expressly recorded that he sided with the patrician Ricimer in his quarrel with the emperor Anthemius. In the year 475, by one of the endless revolutions which marked the close of the Western empire, the emperor Nepos was driven into exile, and the successful rebel Orestes was enabled to array in the purple his so...who was named Romulus after his grandfather.... Before this puppet emperor had been a year on the throne the barbarian mercenaries, who were chiefly drawn from the Danubian tribes aforementioned, rose in mutiny, demanding to be made proprietors of one-third of the soil of Italy. To this request Orestes returned a peremptory negative. Odoacer now offered his fellow soldiers to obtain for them all that they desired if they would seat him on the throne. On the 23rd of August 476 he was proclaimed king....Rome at once accepted the new ruler.

Odoacer was forty-two years of age when he thus became chief ruler of Italy, and he reigned thirteen years with undisputed sway. ....Our information as to the actual title assumed by the new ruler is somewhat confused. He does not appear to have called himself king of Italy. His kingship seems to have marked only his relation to his Teutonic followers, among whom he was "king of the Turcilingi", "king of the Heruli", and so forth, according to the nationality with which he was dealing. By the Roman inhabitants of Italy he was addressed as "dominus noster", but his right to exercise power would in their eyes rest, in theory, on his recognition as patricius by the Byzantine Augustus. At the same time he marked his own high pretensions by assuming the prefix Flavius, a reminiscence of the early emperors, to which the barbarian rulers of realms formed out of the Roman state seem to have been peculiarly partial. His internal administration was probably, upon the whole, wise and moderate, though we hear some complaints of financial oppression, and he may be looked upon, as a not altogether unworthy predecessor of Theodoric.

....His increasing power rendered him too formidable to the Byzantine court, with whom his relations had for some time been growing less friendly. At the same time, Zeno was embarrassed by the formidable neighborhood of Theodoric and his Ostrogothic warriors, who were almost equally burdensome as enemies or as allies...The details of the Ostrogothic invasion of Italy belong properly to the life of Theodoric. It is sufficient to state here that he entered Italy in August 489, defeated Odoacer at the Isontius (Isonzo) on the 28th of August, and at Verona on the 30th of September. Odoacer then shut himself up in Ravenna, and there maintained himself for four years...It was stipulated that Ravenna should be surrendered, that Odoacer's life should be spared, and that he and Thedoric should be recognized as joint rulers of the Roman state. The arrangement was evidently a precarious one, and was soon terminated by the treachery of Theodoric. He invited his rival to a banquet in the palace of the Lauretum on the 15th of March, and there slew him with his own hand. Onulf, the brother of the murdered king, was shot down while attempting to escape through the palace garden, and Thelan, his son, was not long after put to death by order of the conqueror. Thus perished the whole race of Odoacer.

3. The Future Messiah son of Joseph Descendant of Jeroboam
The following extract is taken from the coming chapter 14 of our ongoing Brit-Am Commentary to the Book of Kings.
It quotes a source of interest that we deem worthy of separate consideration.
Actually this source does not say very much and what it does say it says in a convoluted fashion.
Nevertheless it is interesting.
The extract below actually relies on about six different sources which can be quite confusing. Nevertheless the different sources all seem to agree with each and point towards the same conclusion, so read it as it is.

Extract:

1-Kings chapter 14 tells how the son of jeroboam was sick. Jeroboam sent his wife (disguised as a commoner) to Shiloh to ask the Prophet Ahiyah
what will come of him. The Prophet says the boy will die but at the least will merit to be buried respectfully since SOME GOOD THING has been found in him.

[1-Kings 14:13] AND ALL ISRAEL SHALL MOURN FOR HIM, AND BURY HIM: FOR HE ONLY OF JEROBOAM SHALL COME TO THE GRAVE, BECAUSE IN HIM THERE IS FOUND SOME GOOD THING TOWARD THE LORD GOD OF ISRAEL IN THE HOUSE OF JEROBOAM.

The Commentary, "Mishbetsot Zahav", quotes from the "Beer Moshe" who in turn cites the Zohar Chadash, the Megileh Amukot, and other works. The Zohar Chadash says:
#And that Messiah [Mashiach, i.e. Annointed One] will be from the Tribe of Ephraim of the seed of Jeroboam son of Nebat, a descendant of Abiya who died in his youth. On the day that Abiya died a son was born to him....and from that son of Abiya  will come the Messiah [son of Joseph] of whom it is written,   AND ALL ISRAEL SHALL MOURN FOR HIM, AND BURY HIM  [1-Kings 14:13]. This was a prophecy both for the immediate events and  for the distant future FOR HE ONLY OF JEROBOAM SHALL COME TO THE GRAVE, BECAUSE IN HIM THERE IS FOUND SOME GOOD THING. This is the Messiah [son of Joseph] in whom will be found SOME GOOD THING TOWARD THE LORD GOD OF ISRAEL. #

The Megaleh Amukot (i.e. Rabbi Nathan Nata Spira,  1585 -1633, Poland) on the above passage from the Zohar says [and we shall paraphrase in the light of the sources quoted]:

#The Messiah son of Joseph [is a descendant of] Abiya son of Jeroboam, as it says BECAUSE IN HIM THERE IS FOUND SOME GOOD THING [1-Kings 14:13].  The Ancestors of the Tribes [who were jealous of  Joseph and angry with him] saw that Jeroboam was destined to descend from Josep, but the Patriarch Jacob [their father] saw further. He foresaw that the Messiah son of Joseph would come from him, that in him would be FOUND SOME GOOD THING [1-Kings 14:13]. This is what it means BUT HIS FATHER KEPT  THE MATTER [Genesis 37:11] {translated in the KJ as BUT HIS FATHER OBSERVED THE SAYING}.
[The future redemption is described as a time when we shall]
COME REJOICING bringing in the sheaves [Psalms 126:6]. This will rectify what happened when  Joseph said to his brothers about a dream in which WE WERE BINDING SHEAVES IN THE FIELD [Genesis 37:7][and your sheaves bowed down to mine. This signified that Joseph would rule over them. They were angry as a result of which it came to pass that the Kings that came from Joseph caused the Israelites to worship idols.
Midrash Breishit Rabah 84:10:
[Genesis 37:7] FOR, BEHOLD, WE WERE BINDING SHEAVES IN THE FIELD, AND, LO, MY SHEAF AROSE,  AND ALSO STOOD UPRIGHT; AND, BEHOLD, YOUR SHEAVES STOOD ROUND ABOUT, AND MADE  OBEISANCE TO MY SHEAF.
The Hebrew word for MY SHEAF is ALUMATI which came to expression in a negative fashion,
YOU ARE DESTINED TO MAKE DUMB IDOLS [Hebrew Elilim [idols] Alumim [dumb] which  sound similar to ALUMATI (MY SHEAF) by the golden bull calves of Jeroboam and to say,
BEHOLD THY GODS, O ISRAEL [1-Kings 12:28]. [Commentary Yafet Toar: As if the brothers of Joseph due to their jealousy of him caused the kings that came out of him to bring Israel to worship idols. ] Nevertheless, the Messiah son of Joseph, descendant  of ] Abiya will bring in the sheaves [ALUMOT] and atone for the DUMB IDOLS of Jeroboam.##
The above Commentary based on the Midrash and other Commentatories is not necessarily making any historical claims but rather pointing out how from Joseph was destined to emerge Jeroboam who himself caused damage but from his descendants will emerge a Savior in the End Times.

The whole degeneration of Joseph (representing all the Ten Tribes) with his Exile and losing his Israelite Identity in the End Times will be seen as having fulfilled a Divinely Ordained Plan which will culminate in Joseph returning and rectifying whatever wrong he may have done.
