#2. Question: Is the Island of Cyprus Part of the Promised Land of Israel?
http://www.britam.org/Questions/QuesLand.html#Cyprus

Dear Yair,
I was interested to read that Cyprus was possibly/probably part of ancient
Israel.  In 1878 the British and the Ottoman Sultan agreed that the
possession and administration of Cyprus was vested in Great Britain (in
return for British military help against Russia). Although Cyprus was
granted independence in 1960, Great Britain retained two Sovereign Base
Areas (SBA) on the island for both Royal Air Force and Army bases. An SBA is
counted as still part of Great Britain. If the end time role of Britain is
to support Israel militarily, then it is already within permanent fighter
base range and it is already in position within the ancient boundaries of
the Holy Land.  It is interesting to note that Cyprus was a jumping off
point for the Crusades. Also, many English people have moved to Cyprus
permanently. I can't find statistics for this but to anyone visiting Cyprus
the level of British influence is universal.
Regards
Bob Davis

3. Brian Patmore: Khazar Capital Being Excavated
From: Brian Patmore <manco_yupanqui@bigpond.com>

Hi Yair,
I just came across this interesting article regarding the Kazars.
Archeologists have just discovered what appears to be their long lost capital.
The reference is:

http://www.bigpond.com/news/technology/content/20080903/2354822.asp

Details are as follows:

Russian archaeologists find long-lost Jewish capital
September 3, 2008 - 10:14PM
Source: ABC
Russian archaeologists say they have found the long-lost capital of the
Khazar kingdom in southern Russia, a breakthrough for research on the ancient Jewish state.

"This is a hugely important discovery," expedition
organiser Dmitry Vasilyev said from Astrakhan State University after returning from excavations near the village of Samosdelka, just north of the Caspian Sea.

"We can now shed light on one of the most intriguing mysteries of that period - how the
Khazars actually lived. We know very little about the Khazars - about their traditions, their funerary rites, their culture," he said.

The city was the capital of the
Khazars, a semi-nomadic Turkic peoples who adopted Judaism as a state religion, from between the 8th and the 10th centuries, when it was captured and sacked by the rulers of ancient Russia.

At its height, the Khazar state and its tributaries controlled much of what is now southern Russia, western Kazakhstan, eastern Ukraine, Azerbaijan and large parts of Russia's North Caucasus region.

The capital is referred to as
Itil in Arab chronicles but Mr Vasilyev said the word may actually have been used to refer to the Volga River on which the city was founded or to the surrounding river delta region.

Itil was said to be a multi-ethnic place with houses of worship and judges for Christians, Jews, Muslims and pagans. Its remains have until now never been identified and were said to have been washed away by the Caspian Sea.

Archaeologists have been excavating in the area if
Samosdelka for the past nine years but have only now collected enough material evidence to back their thesis, including the remains of an ancient brick fortress, he added.

"Within the fortress, we have found huts similar to yurts, which are characteristics of
Khazar cities.... The fortress had a triangular shape and was made with bricks. It's another argument that this was no ordinary city."

Around 10 university archaeologists and some 50 students took part in excavations in the region this summer, which are partly financed by the Jewish University in Moscow and the Russian Jewish Congress.

Brit-Am Comment:

Itil was also known as "Saksin" and in the 1200s referred to as "the Saxon city".

4. Brian Patmore: Biblical Verses and the Exile of Israel and Judah
From: Brian Patmore <manco_yupanqui@bigpond.com>
Re: Brit-Am Now no. 1219
Shalom Yair,

Some thoughts from Moses regarding the reasons for the driving out of the twelve tribes from the land.

I refer to Deuteronomy:

Deuteronomy 4:23  Take heed unto yourselves, lest ye forget the covenant of the LORD your God, which he made with you, and make you a graven image, or the likeness of any thing, which the LORD thy God hath forbidden thee.

Deuteronomy 4:24  For the LORD thy God is a consuming fire, even a jealous God.

Deuteronomy 4:25  When thou shalt beget children, and children's children, and ye shall have remained long in the land, and shall corrupt yourselves, and make a graven image, or the likeness of any thing, and shall do evil in the sight of the LORD thy God, to provoke him to anger:

Deuteronomy 4:26  I call heaven and earth to witness against you this day, that ye shall soon utterly perish from off the land whereunto ye go over Jordan to possess it; ye shall not prolong your days upon it, but shall utterly be destroyed.

Deuteronomy 4:27  And the LORD shall scatter you among the nations, and ye shall be left few in number among the heathen, whither the LORD shall lead you.

Deuteronomy 4:28  And there ye shall serve gods, the work of men's hands, wood and stone, which neither see, nor hear, nor eat, nor smell.

Deuteronomy 4:29  But if from thence thou shalt seek the LORD thy God, thou shalt find him, if thou seek him with all thy heart and with all thy soul.

Deuteronomy 4:30  When thou art in tribulation, and all these things are come upon thee, even in the latter days, if thou turn to the LORD thy God, and shalt be obedient unto his voice;

Deuteronomy 4:31  (For the LORD thy God is a merciful God;) he will not forsake thee, neither destroy thee, nor forget the covenant of thy fathers which he sware unto them.

Maybe there may be some food for thought in these lines and in the following lines of Chapter 4 for those interested in the reasons for the scattering among the nations.

Clear enough I think.

Bless you all and hope that one day we can meet Yair.

Brian

5. Accessing The Tamar Yonah Interview with Steven Collins
A few people who went to the interview straight from the Aruzt-7 news plug for it could not find
the second part of it. I myself had the same problem until going straight to the Arutz-7 Radio Section.
Go to
http://www.israelnationalradio.com/
Scroll down a little to the picture of Tamar Yonah with the golden hair and big smile.
There you will find two links.
One is for the first hour and has the following text:
================================================
Historians and Biblical scholars say that King Solomon had a sophisticated navy which voyaged the world in exploration, looking for iron, gold and other materials to build the Holy Temple. Many shipping ports, settlements and colonies were established in places all over the Mediteranian and North African region, as well as Europe and the Americas. Did some of the 10 tribes of the Northern Kingdom escape on ships to distant lands to escape the Assyrian onslaught and subsequent exile? Historian Steve Collins talks about where some of these tribes may have migrated to, including the New World, long before Columbus discovered America!
================================================
Just Beneath the first link and text there is a link for the second hour
with the text:
================================================
Historian Steve Collins continues to share his research on where the Lost Ten Tribes may have spread out to, and describes the mass numbers that they have grown to today, and how they hope to re-unite with Israel in the Messianic age as described in the Tanach (Bible).
================================================
Two hours might sound like a little long but it passes quickly. Steven Collins speaks well, Tamar provides interest with her style of interviewing,
and moves quickly from one topic of interest to another in addition to which a few people phone in with questions and remarks worth listening to.

6. Jonathan Tillotson:
Remarks on Tribal Identifications, Suggestions, and Query on Germany
From: Jonathan Tillotson <jon_tillotson@yahoo.co.uk>
re Tribal Characteristics in a Nut-Shell
http://www.britam.org/tribes/TribecharList.html
I'm glad I could be of help, in leading to an idea. I think it's natural for people to want to understand more about their own national characteristics. If insight into such characteristics can be gleaned from Scripture, and if such characteristics can be corroborated in a reflection on how things are actually the case in ones nation's historical experience, while this- standing alone- may be no proof regarding tribal identification - it may nonetheless inspire a fascination that may lead to a closer look. French people, in other words, may find the correspondences, say, between France and Reuben intriguing merely, in their own eyes, as a piece of fictional mythologizing. Yet this may then lead on, perhaps, to a suspension of disbelief in the face of other evidence. It lays a groundwork at least.

Perhaps you might also like to do similar nutshell analyses at a later date of Israel's principal contemporary enemies (would you not agree?): Esau (Edom) and the Arabic peoples (or some of them at least- Ishmael). Presumably at a depth psychological level their degree of envy regarding Israel is at an altogether intenser pitch than that felt by Reuben towards Joseph..? While this of course does not excuse their hatred of Israel it may perhaps explain it to an extent.

Finally, if you recall during our coffee in Jerusalem you mentioned some prophecy, probably Rabbinic, about how if the Germanic peoples united they would perform an act of great sacrilege (which the Holocaust certainly was). Could you possible let me know what this prophecy was and who said it?

Regards

Jonathan

Brit-Am Reply:

Going from memory,
In the Talmud (Megilla 6) it identifies Edom with Rome and Germany. It says that Germany is divided into ca. 300 states
and that if Edom ever unites it would devastate the world.
The Talmud was finally transcribed in ca. 500-600 CE but contains material from centuries beforehand.
Germany and Italy were more or less united under the Holy Roman Empire but this unification was of doubtful
effectiveness.
Germany in the 1800s still was divided into ca. 300 different little kingdoms.
In 1870 the 2nd Reich was created under Wilhelm-1 and Bismarck.
This was followed by the first great World War in 1914.
Later Nazi Germany combined forces with Fascist Italy which resulted in 1939 with WW2, the Holocaust,
6 million Jewish dead, and ca. 40 million (?) others plus untold destruction and suffering.
This was a unification of Germany with Rome and it did have a devastating effect on the world.
