1. Jonathan Tillotson: In Defence of Open Discussion
From: Jonathan Tillotson <jon_tillotson@yahoo.co.uk>
 Re: Brit-Am Now no. 1198
#1. Ben Zentgraf :  "Stop Calling them Palestinians"
http://britam.org/now/1198Now.html#Ben

Dear Yair,

Regarding the question of whether or not Brit-Am should engage in intellectual debate with its detractors, in connection to the observations of Ben Zentgraf and in reference to your answers to 'left wing' questions posed on your site. I would suggest that you have definitely been right to do this. While Israelite spirituality is in no way purely or exclusively 'rationalist', to a very great extent it must me, since, in accordance with the Shema we are required to worship God with our minds as well as our hearts and our strength.

[By "Shema"  Jonathan Tillotson is referring to the injunction,
HEAR, O ISRAEL: THE LORD OUR GOD IS ONE LORD, Deuteronomy 6:4
where the word "Shema" translated as "HEAR" also connotes "to hear, take to heart".
AND THOU SHALT LOVE THE LORD THY GOD WITH ALL THINE HEART, AND WITH ALL THY SOUL, AND WITH ALL THY MIGHT.  Deuteronomy 6:5]

Is it not also a recurring characteristic of the cultural and historical enemies of the Israelite countries that they have tended to want and still do want to shut down and suppress freedom of thought and enquiry. I do not think we should behave in a similar way, a way that is incompatible with our traditions, I would suggest.

The very fact that in Britam you are as keen as you are to attempt to let secular evidence and extra-scriptural matters support your case, in addition to scripture, shows that you are willing to see Britam's central assertions falsified, if indeed they be false. This shows the strength of your position. It also implicitly carries within it a challenge to your opponents to behave in a similarly calm and dispassionate way, one which, evidently, they are often incapable of doing - which in itself casts their stance in a suspect light, which one hopes will be visible for all to see.

We should also remember what Israel is always in danger of forgetting. That its role in the Earth is to be a servant and a light to the nations -whatever and in spite of the oppositions placed against Israel by non-Israelites. Disengaging from debate with that world is surely, then, for that reason, not advisable. It is in no way a confession of weakness to reach out to and with respect (even if it be undeserved) engage with civility with detractors. On the contrary it shows a very great strength, in my opinion.

We should also I think remember that, oddly enough, many of the most outspoken critics of Israel, or aspects thereof, are themselves members of Israelite nations, and presumably often of Israelite ancestry. For a complex number of reasons many in Brit-Am cultures are engaged in an almost frenzied stupor of disdain for their own cultural heritage and roots. Quite why this is, is an interesting question in itself. But perhaps it would be good to remember that many are enslaved and blinded by certain materialist and deconstructionist, if not nihilistic ideologies and that this may often cover over an inner unrecognized hunger for the light which may actually, in my opinion, be wanting to find its way, if only in an unarticulated way, towards a higher transcendent understanding. Im not saying this will always be the case but i think it is more than might be supposed.

In any case I do not see it as futile for you to engage in these debate at all..and personally I marvel at the controlled, civil and judicious way in which you respond to those who attack you with a sometimes very great hatred and intemperance - of which they should feel ashamed, and perhaps deep down are.

As I have said before even if everything Britam says is false, you cannot be faulted for the noble spirit in which you explore the issues...and that alone should compel the respect of your adversaries, in my opinion, even though respect so often will be wanting for ideological reasons.

God bless.

Jonathan

Shalom Yair

I agree with all  the remarks made by Ben Zentgraf and particularly regarding stopping the use of the term 'Palestinian'. In perpetuating its use, it achieves legitimacy by stealth and serves to bolster revisionist history, ie lies.

I also agree with your apt and timely quote from Numbers 33:53-56 - sadly we are witnesses to the outworking of this scripture but the principle remains that Israel can never co-exist peacefully with Canaanites whether they are the ancient kind or their modern manifestations. Confirmation comes from the news piece you attached regarding the young Hamas man who has converted to Christianity - here is an ex-Canaanite with whom peace is possible.

As regards continuing dialogue with those who hate Israel, this should never happen at the expense of compromising what the ALMIGHTY has determined or by negotiating away what belongs to the Almighty. Israel is then doing what she was commanded not to do and is literally 'caught  between the rock and a hard place'.

Blessings - Tessa
