1. The Population of Israel  in Statistics
Guysen International News <webmaster@guysen.com>
Subject: mailinfo Guysen International, Thursday 31st December 2009

18:32 Israel's population at the end of 2009 stands at 7,509,000. The Central Bureau of Statistics released the figures Wednesday, in advance of the secular New Year. According to the bureau, 75.4 % of the population is Jewish. 20.3 % is Arab and 4.3 % is classified as ''other'' -- either non-Arab Christians or those without a religious designation. Israel's population grew 1.8 % during 2009, with 160,000 births and 39,000 deaths. (Guysen.International.News)

2. The State of Israel and Abortions

From: Guysen International News <webmaster@guysen.com>
Subject: mailinfo Guysen International, Monday January 4th 2010

23:56 Although 99 percent of applications to public abortion committees are approved and the population has grown considerably in the last two decades, the number and rate of legal abortions steadily declined, to 19,594 in 2008, according to a report in the Jerusalem Post. This constitutes an 18% drop since 1990 and a 10% fall since 2000, according to the Health Ministry's report on legal abortions between 1990 and 2008, released for publication on Monday morning. The highest recorded number of legal abortions was 20,378 in 2004. It would seem that reasons for the decline today include a much smaller number of female Russian immigrants of fertile age - who used abortions as birth control in their native country - women's higher levels of education and greater access to and information about birth control and ''morning-after'' pills. (Guysen.International.News)
The rate of legal abortions in Israel is low compared to those in many Western European countries, both among women and girls up to the age of 20 and among women over 35, the report notes. The legal abortion rates per 1,000 live births are 154 in Spain, 180 in Iceland, 184.7 in Israel, 307 in France, 794 in Hungary, 1,629 in Bulgaria and 5,209 in Russia. Although there are religious groups that discourage abortions, the process for getting a legal abortion in Israel since 1977 has not involved wild demonstrations and violence, as has been the case in the US. Christian evangelist extremists have burned abortion and family planning clinics and even killed doctors.

A portion of the 'Book of Isaiah' from the Dead Sea scrolls has been on display at the Royal Ontario Museum in Toronto since last June. Sunday is the last day of the exhibit.

The Canadian government says it will not act upon a request by the Jordanian government that it seize the 2,000-year-old Dead Sea scrolls, now on their last day of display at the Royal Ontario Museum in Toronto.

Discovered in 1947 by Bedouin tribesmen in caves bordering Israel and Jordan, the 100,000 fragments of ancient religious parchment and papyrus manuscripts have been a source of conflict between Israelis, Jordanians and Palestinians who all claim ownership.

Jordan formally asked Canada to seize the 16 scrolls, which have been on display at the ROM since last June. Jan. 3 is the last day the scrolls will be exhibited.

According to The Globe and Mail, the Canadian government issued a statement at the end of the year in reaction to Jordan's request saying that "differences regarding ownership of the Dead Sea scrolls should be addressed by Israel, Jordan and the Palestinian Authority. It would not be appropriate for Canada to intervene as a third party."

On Sunday, Israeli officials released a statement saying the Jordanian claims are "completely ridiculous" and that the scrolls have little or no connection to Jordan's history.

Both Jordanian and Palestinian authorities have said they do not want Canada to determine ownership, but to place them under Canada's custody until the scrolls' ownership is determined.

Jordan contends Israel acted illegally in 1967 when it took the scrolls from a museum in East Jerusalem, which Israel seized from Jordan during the Six-Day War.

Palestinians have argued the scrolls, dating as far back as 250 BC, are an integral part of their heritage also.

The Dead Sea scrolls consist of documents and biblical texts written in Hebrew, Aramaic and Greek. They were uncovered over a seven-year period on the northwest shore of the Dead Sea.
