Canada to boycott Durban II as "anti-Semitic, anti-western hatefest"

28 June: Prime minister Stephen Harper said Canada has every reason to expect the follow-up Durban II conference to be a repeat of Durban I, which purported to combat racism. Addressing an Ottawa ceremony awarding him the B'nai Brith Gold Medallion for humanitarianism, Harper called Israel a friend an ally, stressed Canada's unshakable support for its right to exist and self-defense as well as support for a two-state solution in the Middle East. Canada, he noted, was the first country to suspend relations with the Hamas-led government in Palestinian and has "refused to be bullied into signing on to one-sided international resolutions against Israel."

Past recipients of the Gold Medallion are David Ben Gurion and US presidents Harry Truman and John F. Kennedy.

A 70-year-old Indian woman is claiming the title of the world's oldest mother after giving birth to twins.

Claims of a record-breaking birth were made when Omkari Panwar had a tiny boy and girl weighing just 2lbs each and delivered one-month early by Caesarian section.

Establishing the veracity of the claim could prove difficult given that Mrs Panwar does not have a birth certificate and does not know her date of birth.

Her age has been estimated by her assertion that she was nine years old when the British Raj left India in 1947.

The frail pensioner, who has two adult daughters and five grandchildren, controversially underwent IVF treatment to produce a male heir to the family's smallholdings.

According to doctors at Jaswant Roy Speciality Hospital, the twins are expected to survive.

The previous oldest ever mother was Adriana Iliescu, a Romanian who gave birth to a daughter, aged 66 in 2005.
