G-G dedicates Israeli park to Aussies

April 29, 2008 - 8:28AM

Governor-General Michael Jeffery and Israel's president have dedicated a park that celebrates the contribution of Australian soldiers to events that led to creation of the state of Israel.

Major General Jeffery is the first Australian governor-general to visit Israel.

On Monday he and Israeli President Shimon Peres opened the Park of the Australian Soldier in the southern city of Beersheba to celebrate Israel's 60th anniversary.

The park commemorates the Australian Light Horse Brigade's famous 1917 World War I charge against Turkish forces in Beersheba.

The battle was the beginning of the end for Turkish rule in the Holy Land. It cleared the way for Britain to sign the 1917 Balfour declaration that contributed to the creation of a Jewish state.

"The distance between Australia and Israel is far geographically, but morally we are very close," Peres said.

He and Jeffery unveiled a sculpture commemorating the Australian Light Horse Brigade's famous World War I charge against Turkish forces in Beersheba.

At the park's dedication, young Israeli soldiers mixed with Australian veterans in full dress uniform as Maj Gen Jeffery praised the park for "permanently uniting Israelis with Australia".

The park, which features green space and a playground for children with disabilities, was funded by the Pratt Foundation, a charitable fund started by Australian-Jewish businessman Richard Pratt, which works in both Australia and Israel.

Australian Jews in the audience said it made them proud to see the Australian flag flying alongside the Israeli one.

"We're all Jewish, too," said Australian Saatchi Goldwater, 18, who is living in Israel for the year. "We help out Israel, and they help out us."

About 110,000 Jews live in Australia today, primarily in Sydney and Melbourne.

We reported:
That Abbas intended to publicly honor the murderers but in the meantime has backed down from it.

This was based on an earlier report from Arut-7 (Israel National News).

A later report from the same source says that despite his assurance to Dalia Itzik (Speaker of the Knesset), Herr Abbas -who wrote a PhD from Moscow for denying the Holocaust
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mahmoud_Abbas
has indeed gone ahead and given the award to the vixen murderesses.

#3. US  Spies: What Israel Should Do
http://britam.org/jerusalem/jerusalem761.html#US
we quoted a viewpoint that we understood emanated
from (imra@netvision.net.il ) whereas the source was actually from the prelude
to an article by Caroline Glick and she is the author.

Caroline Glick - THE JERUSALEM POST, April 25, 2008
Column One: Hardball with Washington

"The first thing [Israel] should do is arrest officials suspected of transferring classified materials to the US without authorization. It should then publish the names and details of US spies whom Israel previously caught and treated with kid gloves. Then it should publicly demand that Bush release Pollard from the prison where he rots, while the likes of Hizbullah agent Nada Prouty - who penetrated both the FBI and the CIA - is expected to receive a six-month prison sentence for her crimes."
