The "Commandment" of Environmental Protection
Inside Israel
[] One of man's duties after Creation was "to preserve" the world, according to the Torah. In this vein, hareidi-religious Israelis have recently become publicly active in environmental protection.
Yehuda Ganut, from a predominantly hareidi neighborhood in Petach Tikva, has founded Hareidim L'Svivah [religious-hareidim for the environment]. This group is similar to one in Har Nof which earlier this year actively worked for preserving nature areas in the fast-developing region.

Suffering from pollution and noise in Petach Tikva, in the greater Tel Aviv area, Ganut convinced the city to move a nearby bus terminal to a different area. After a television crew came to his Hadar Ganim neighborhood and publicized the group's activism, Ganut turned to the issue of parks and open spaces.

Ganut has support from many neighbors who studied in the Hevron Yeshiva in Jerusalem and together founded the Hadar Ganim area. Next on Hareidim L'Sviva's list of targets is a new access road to the neighborhood, which Ganut says will be a further source of pollution and noise.

Ganut freely quotes sources in Jewish Law concerning the need for a clean and safe environment. One of his favorite is that of the Rabbi Yaakov Yisroel Kanievsky, known as the Steipler Gaon, who spoke about the value of trees as an expression of G-d's works.

A hareidi newspaper has featured Ganut and his activities, noting they are welcome additions to "a field that probably was not previously known to exist."

Ancient Pots Reveal Ancient Diets

By analysing fat traces in 3000 year old cooking pots from Gordium in central Turkey, Todd Craig at the University of New England has been able to trace the transition between plant oils and animal fats, marking the arrival of new groups of people. So far, he has identified pork, beef, sheep and some plant oils.

Todd Craig: We don’t get complete pots complete pots are quite rare but what we have are pieces of pots which we can extract fats from.

Robyn Williams: There’s still food traces left in those ancient pots, even 3000 years after the event?

Todd Craig: Yes, it’s really quite incredible. What we found is that there are small amounts of fats still there. Fats are quite interesting in that they’re very, very hydrophobic, which means they don’t like water, so basically ground water percolation through a site, while it will destroy most other kinds of foods, won’t destroy fats.

Robyn Williams: But what does it tell you, apart from the fact that they may have used olive oil?

Todd Craig: Different cultures have different kinds of food, all you have to do is look at our modern world, we have regional cuisines and things like that. So a large change in food can usually be taken to mean a large change in population. So what we’re doing is looking at changes in the food to try and date the arrival of new groups of people.

Robyn Williams: And what have you found?

Todd Craig: Well, we found that at the end of the late Bronze Age we know that there was a large collapse of the civilisation at that time and we found that at the start of the next period there is a really, really large change in the way that people are eating foods. From the late Bronze Age we see that people were eating a diet mainly composed of plain foods whereas at the start of the early Iron Age, the next period, we see that there is a much great emphasis on sheep and beef.

Robyn Williams: And you can sheep and beef fat out the pots sherds that you’ve dug up?

Todd Craig: Yes, absolutely. We’re talking about very small amounts of fats of course, milligrams not kilograms.

Robyn Williams: No, sure but traces how do you get those traces out of the pottery?

Todd Craig: Basically what we do is grind the pottery and then extract it with methanol and chloroform in an ultrasonicator, which effectively removes the fats from the ceramic.

Robyn Williams: How do you tell sheep fat from beef fat?

Todd Craig: We’ve gone to a lot of trouble of constructing a reference set for this type of work and you can tell by the different types of fats that are actually in the ceramic what they’re likely to come from. Some animals do not have certain kinds of fats whereas some plants have certain kinds of fats, and from that we can diagnose what it actually was likely to be.

Robyn Williams: And you’re saying that there’s a transition point going from lots of plant oils at one stage to a time when obviously they got their animals and they were scoffing them. Any historical records that back up this transition that confirm what you’ve found?

Todd Craig: Well, we do know that at some stage there was a change in population where a group called the Phrygians move into the region replacing the Hittite population of the late Bronze Age. The exact timing of this is kind of vague and part of what the study is trying to establish is when these people actually do arrive. But yes, there is evidence that they do come into the region and these Phrygians are probably of Greek origin, which means that they’re likely to bring a Greek style diet with them with the heavy emphasis on things like sheep, which is exactly what we’re seeing.

Archaeologists believe they have discovered part of throne of Darius
TEHRAN, Dec. 20 (MNA) -- Iranian archaeologists believe they have found a part of one leg of the throne of Darius the Great during their excavations at Persepolis, the ancient capital of the Achaemenid dynasty, the director of the team of archaeologists announced Sunday.

“Four archaeologists of the team found a piece of lapis lazuli during their excavations in water canals passing under the treasury in southeastern Persepolis last year,” said Alireza Askari, adding, “The studies on the piece of stone over the past year led the archaeologists to surmise that the stone had probably been a part of a leg of the throne of Darius.”

According to historical sources, the upper parts of the throne of Darius were been made of gold, silver, and ivory and its legs were made of lapis lazuli, Askari said.

The throne had been transferred to the treasury after Xerxes I, the son of Darius, was crowned king. In addition, the figures carved on the stone are similar to the relief works in different parts of Persepolis, he stated.

Persepolis was established by Darius I in the late 6th century B.C. Its ruins lie 56 kilometers northeast of Shiraz. Darius transferred the capital of the Achaemenid dynasty to Persepolis from Pasargadae, where Cyrus the Great, the founder of the Persian Empire, had ruled.

4. International Tsunami Damage
The death toll from the tidal waves that struck nine Indian Ocean countries has risen to 23,700, the international Red Cross said Monday.

The highest toll was in Sri Lanka, with 12,000 deaths assumed. In India the number was 5,000, in Indonesia 6,000, and over 800 in Thailand.

The toll had been extended to include some 500 deaths along the shores of Somalia - for the first time including Africa.

Other countries reporting included Malaysia with 52 deaths, the Maldives with 43, Myanmar with 12 and the Seychelles with three.

A large proportion of the victims were youngsters, and funerals were held for children and teenagers who could not cope with the fury of the sea. Ted Chaiban, chief for the UNs children's Fund in Sri Lanka, estimated that nearly half the victims there were children.

In Cuddalore, India, the bodies of more than 150 children killed were buried in a mass grave; their weeping, red-eyed parents looking on as a bulldozer filled the hole with sodden earth.

The tides have left million of people homeless, and thousands were still missing.

The severity of malaria attacks also increases because people move from their home districts where they have developed immunity to the local version of the malaria parasite, medical officials said.

The United Nations, which is coordinating with organizations including the international Red Cross, will have to rely on countries such as India to shoulder much of the burden for their own recovery.

The United Nations' World Food Program appealed Sunday for an initial US$1.5 million to help meet immediate food needs of hundreds of thousands of Tsunami victims. A much larger regional appeal will be launched later this week.

Britain and Italy each confirmed that 11 of their citizens had died in Thailand, Norway confirmed 10 dead, Sweden had nine, with hundreds unaccounted for, the United States confirmed eight dead, France and Denmark confirmed three, and Australia, Belgium, South Africa two. Finland confirmed one.

Malaysia, South Korea, Switzerland, Poland, Japan, Russia, Turkey, the Netherlands, Spain, Portugal, Czech Republic had unconfirmed reports of dead or missing.

Ezekiel 31:3) and by the Mountains (Isaiah 54:10). The destruction of the pagans is represented by the action of a great flood of water or to destruction wrought by the action of water. The Psalm indicates the final war of Gog and Magog when those nations who do not recognize the God of Israel will war against Israel and meet their downfall.

It may be that The Gentile Nations are referred to as Cedars of Lebanon since in the future they are destined to be ruled from Israel represented by Lebanon.

When disaster strikes anywhere in the world, Israelis can be counted on to help. So it's no surprise that within hours of the devastating tsunami in the Indian Ocean, the following humanitarian missions all departed from the tiny Jewish state:

IDF rescue team on its way to Sri Lanka
The Israeli organization Latet ('To Give') filled a jumbo jet with 18 tons of supplies.

A medical team headed by four doctors from Jerusalem's Hadassah Hospital arrived in Sri Lanka on Monday night (Dec. 27), carrying medicine and baby food. The doctors specialize in rescue operations, trauma and pediatrics.

An IDF rescue team is now on its way to Sri Lanka with 80 tons of aid material, including 10,000 blankets, tents, nylon sheeting and water containers, all contributed by the IDF.

A ZAKA rescue-and-recovery team arrived in the disaster areas Monday night, armed with its specialized equipment for identifying bodies.

A Health Ministry contingent left for Thailand on Monday night to aid in rescue efforts. The group includes doctors, nurses and four members of the IDF.

Israel has also offered its assistance to India a search-and-rescue team from the Home Front Command, as well as consignments of food and medicine.

Yet, with the exception of UPI (as of this writing - Wed. 4pm EST), none of the major news outlets have dedicated an article to this remarkable Israeli humanitarian effort. This, despite the fact that the IDF sent all Israel-based journalists a press release Monday evening (Dec. 27), inviting them to the airport to cover the departure of one IDF group.

This is all the more surprising given the fact that the major news agencies have entire teams of reporters in Israel, who submit at least one 'Israel-article' each day.

So what did the Associated Press send out today to its 15,000 subscribing news agencies? A dreary story about the construction of a new IDF base near Jenin. AP sarcastically remarked in this 'news' story that the base's 'elaborate color scheme and landscaping shows that the army is not planning to pull its forces out of the area anytime soon.'

The lack of media interest in this Israeli humanitarian effort means that Israeli benevolence toward other peoples is not fairly conveyed to the western world. Perhaps if it were conveyed, observers would come to understand something else that Israel's response to Palestinian violence is also motivated by the highest ethical concern for all human life, and is not (as the media so often portray it) driven by an oppressive, mean-spirited national ethos.

Pope Pius XII ordered the papal nuncio in France to impede the return of Jewish child survivors of the Holocaust to their families or Jewish communities following World War II, according to a document published Tuesday in Corriere della Sera.

According to the report, in 1946 the pope instructed Nuncio Angelo Roncalli to refuse to hand back children who had been baptized by their Catholic caretakers, but Roncalli, the future Pope John XXIII, disobeyed.

The document is located in the first tome of the fifth volume of Years in France, the Agendas of Nunzio Roncalli, 1945-1948, edited by Etienne Fouilloux, which has just been published by the Bologna Institute for Religious Sciences, which is issuing the diaries and agendas of John XXIII. The French original is in the archives of the French Catholic Church.

According to Bologna Institute director Alberto Melloni, Roncalli had just arrived on the French post-war scene, and the Catholic Church was in turmoil, navigating between collaborationists and partisans of the Resistance in its own ranks, but also oscillating ideologically between theological renewal and an increased vigor of Holy Office supporters.

Roncalli, though loyal to Pius XII, used his judgment and made independent moves, Melloni said. Roncalli's Agenda notes that in 1946 he received Yitzhak Herzog, chief rabbi of Palestine, as a friend, and on July 19 provided him with a letter authorizing him "to use his authority with the relevant institutions so that whenever the case arises, these children may return to their original environment."

Three months later, he received the orders from the Holy Office to impede the return of the children.

Some cases of the protected Jewish children had happy endings in which they were returned to the Jewish community. Melloni said reliable records are not available, except "in the injured memory of the victims of this human and spiritual tragedy."

One of my cousins was there, but he survived.

The United States yesterday rejected claims it had been stingy in its response to the disaster in South-East Asia but it also agreed to give more money.

"The US is not stingy," said Secretary of State Colin Powell. "We are the greatest contributor to international relief efforts in the world."

The US initially said it would give $US15 million ($A19.2 million) in aid, an amount considered paltry given the scale of the disaster. Critics noted the US was giving less than the cost of one F-16 fighter and less than the US spends in an hour in Iraq.

In response, the US yesterday more than doubled its aid package to $US35 million, making it the largest single donor. Mr Powell said the initial $US15 million should not be seen as "just a one-time thing".

Australia, which has only one-15th of the population of the US, has pledged more than $A43 million - $35 million from the Federal Government and more than $8 million from the states and territories - or more than Britain, Germany and France combined.

France has so far pledged just $170,000, plus an aircraft with 100 medical personnel and relief workers on board.

However, his comments were seized upon by aid agencies, dismayed by the initial response to the tsunamis. The International Committee of the Red Cross has said it hopes to raise $44 million but the damage bill is estimated to be in the billions.

A year ago last January, the editor-in-chief of the prominent Saudi newspaper Al-Riyadh, Turki Al-Sudairi, disclosed that the Saudi government dispenses millions of dollars a year in bribes to journalists around the world to write articles sympathetic to Saudi Arabia and to attack Israel.

French newspapers are virulently anti-Semitic as it is, but Saudi money insures they stay that way. Hundreds of journalists, reporters, commentators, and talking heads from scores of publications and media outlets in dozens of countries are on the Saudi payroll. It’s a very sophisticated operation, and world-wide in scope.

That scope includes America especially America. How many American reporters and columnists liberal and conservative are on the Saudi payroll? The best person to investigate this would be legendary journalist Arnaud de Borchgrave, whose deep contacts in both Saudi Arabia and throughout the entire global media community go back decades.

No one would be better than Arnaud at determining whether or not such prominent columnists as Robert Novak and Georgie Anne Geyer, who write consistently fawning columns on Saudi Arabia and blistering attacks on Israel, are beyond suspicion.

It would also be an excellent opportunity for Arnaud to dispel the persistent belief among a number of otherwise knowledgeable people in Washington that, given Arnaud! ’s own rabidly anti-Israel columns, he himself is on the Saudi payroll which I am sure could not possibly be true.

The Saudi press has acknowledged that the Saudi government is bribing journalists all over the world.

Israel's industrial exports added up to 30 billion dollars in the year 2004 an increase of nearly 20% over the year 2003.
Last year's exports increase over the year 2002 stood at only 6.2%, while in 2002, it decreased by 2.5% compared to 2001.

More than a fifth of the exports in 2004 were of polished diamonds, exports of which increased in 2004 by 12.8%, to a total of $6.4 billion.

Hi-tech exports represented an even bigger share of Israeli exports - almost $11 billion worth, a jump of 21.7% over the year before.

Exports of electronic communications equipment jumped at a rate of 20.3%, to $2.874 billion, following a decline over the past three years.

Electronic components exports increased in 2004 by 12.1%, reaching a level of $1.7 billion, following a decline in 2003 and a very steep decline in 2002.

Other areas of hi-tech export that increased were medical equipment, medicines, office software, and, to a moderate extent, aircraft. Chemicals - up 24.4%. Electric motors and equipments 2.5%. Plastics and rubber 17.2%. Metal products 28%. Quarry exports up 28.7%, to $627 million.

Textiles and clothing exports rose 10.2% to almost $1.1 million. Food exports continued to rise, for the fourth year in a row, and stands now at $600 million up 17.1% since last year.

Israel's exports to Europe rose by 18% since 2003. To other countries: Ireland up 62%; Switzerland 55%; Croatia 126%; Turkey 82%; Uzbekistan 51%; Russia 44%, Taiwan 95%, Hong Kong 28%.

Based on the polls I've seen, I think that a substantial majority of Americans are pro-Israeli and only a minority would favor a "European" solution.

This is powerful to say the least. Sounds as if you have a good handle on world situations and politics. I agree with you on most all the points you make - but I am uneasy about all the Jews being gathered in one place - Israel would make a more desirable target for the enemy to eliminate all the Jews if they were all inhabiting the land of Israel. Having the Jews scattered throughout America and other western nations does protect Judah from mass annihilation, don't you think. Until Ephraim has destroyed the enemy - the Israelites, both Joseph and Judah must remail scattered. To force prophecy into happening at man's own wishes would only be disasterous.

I believe you left out an a very important element - a group that you, of
all people, know is out there but do not seem to recognize. I am talking
about the thousands of those from the nations all over the world who have
identified themselves with Israel but are believers in Yeshua as the
Messiah.
This group believe strongly that they are a part of the lost tribes who are
returning to the G-d if Israel and His instructions for living - His Torah.
They keep Shabbat and the festivals, avoid pagan "holydays", keep kosher,
circumcise their children, struggle to learn the Hebrew language, and LOVE
Israel AND the Jewish people. They have left the christian churches with
their pagan practices and meet in homes and small congregations all over the
world. They are despised by their former christian churches because of their
love for Torah.
They are considered outcasts by most Jews, religious and secular, and all
but a few of the intenational "messianic" Jewish organizations because thay
are not Jews. They are called Jewish wannabe's and told they have no
inheritance with Israel. They seem to be considered a threat to most
religious and Zionist Jews because they identify with Israel and because of
their belief in Yeshau.
They believe that the promises to Ephriam and Ez. 47: 21-23 belong to them.
They KNOW that they are part of the prophesied returning Israel and that one
day they WILL return. Many are willing at this time to give up their own
national citizenship to join themselves to Israel. They know they face
hardship and persecution. They are Israel's most loyal supporters - much
more than your secular Jewish American brothers. Their love for Israel knows
no bounds. Their hearts and loyalties are with Israel. They believe that the
Land of Israel is G-d's inheritance for the people of Israel and long to
JOIN themselves to the people of Israel and claim their inheritance ALONG
WITH their Jewish brothers.
I do not know how many there are but I believe the number to be in the
hundreds of thousands, mostly in the United States, but literally from the 4
corners of the earth. They have a few teachers but no real leader. Many came
to their understanding of their identity just by reading scripture. Their
hearts and eyes were opened and they bgan to identify themselves as
Israelites. Many thought they were the only one and were surprised to find
so many others who believe the same. The internet has shown us that we are
not alone.
At this time there are 2 main factors that hinder them from physically
joining with their Jewish brothers. Both are factors on the part of Judah.
The first is Judah's failure to recognize them as their literal Ephriamite
brothers. At this time blood proof seems to be more important to Judah than
identity and loyalty. I believe there will come a time when Judah will
recognize their need for their loyal brothers to be in the land standing
with them against all who would come against them.
The second is Judah's failure to accept so many of Ephriam as believers in
Yeshua as the promised Messiah. As non Jewish believers in Yeshua we are
banned from returning to the land. My prayer is that the time is near for
Judah to accept us back into the land as brothers without asking us to give
up our Messiah. We long to return home.

Despite Evidence, French TV Still Refuses Al-Dura Probe
Inside Israel
French government-run TV continues to avoid an impartial investigation of the video it broadcast of the killing of 12-year-old Muhammad Al-Dura, during the first weeks of the Oslo War.
The clip, of an Arab boy and his father cowering behind a barrel during a gun battle between Arab terrorists and IDF soldiers, became famous when Arab sources claimed it showed Israelis killing a scared boy. Al-Dura’s image became a symbol of the supposed brutality of Israel and the IDF. A scene from the Al-Dura video was even displayed prominently in the background as Jewish Wall Street Journal reporter Daniel Pearl was murdered by Muslim kidnappers in Pakistan.

Evidence shows, however, that he was not killed by Israeli fire. Following the broadcast of the video, the IDF, using drone and satellite photography, demonstrated the near-impossibility of Al-Dura having been hit by an IDF bullet. Independent media analysts in Israel, Germany and France claim to have conclusive evidence proving the entire incident was staged.

Calls for an investigation into the event, however, which are supported by at least one member of the French parliament, have been met with complete refusal to cooperate on the part of France’s Channel 2.

This is hardly the first time the veracity of the Al-Dura incident has been challenged. In 2002, an extensive German documentary produced by Esther Shapira concluded that in view of the positions of the child and the IDF posts, it was more probable that the boy was hit by an Arab bullet.

According to France's Channel 2 Television reporter Charles Enderlin, Al-Dura was killed and his father was severely wounded by Israeli bullets. Enderlin was not present during the incident; French television hired an Arab cameraman from the PA, Talal Abu Rahma, who was the only cameraman to record the shooting of Al-Dura

In a rare move, the state-run TV station decided to distribute the video clip as a 55-second story to TV stations worldwide at no cost. The station justified this by saying it did not want to make money on such a sad incident.

Philippe Karsenty, who heads Media-Ratings, a French media watchdog agency, has also examined the full 27-minute raw footage of the video and come to the conclusion that the entire report was fabricated. "The report is false. I've seen the elements of France 2's report and it is clear that it is a fake," said Karsenty. "It is clear that it was staged."

Karsenty told CNSNews.com that among the elements he found proving the report a forgery was a director ordering retakes of scenes, a number of ambulances appearing within two seconds in an unedited shot after an Arab is said to be wounded, the child hoisting himself up on his elbows after he is said to be dead and no blood or bullet wounds on any of the victims.

Karsenty said he met with French officials and provided them with proof that the tape was a hoax, but has not yet received an official response.

Stephane Juffa, editor of the Israeli Metula News Agency, told CNSNews.com that he and two other colleagues carried out a thorough investigation, including scores of interviews and scene-by-scene analyses of the video and other material filmed in 2000. "The child we see during the shooting is not the same child that we see in the morgue in other footage, who has bullet wounds and is identified as Mohammed Al-Dura by hospital staff," said Juffa. He added that though he had no information about how the child in the morgue was killed, doctors there said the boy arrived hours before the actual Netzarim gun battle described in the video took place.

Roland Blum, a member of the French Assembly, has asked France’s communications minister to investigate France 2's evidence that Israeli soldiers shot and killed Mohammed Al-Dura, but has not yet received a response. "This has become an important issue because of the emotions that France 2's very serious accusations against the Israeli army have aroused," said Blum. "This type of information, particularly when the reporter wasn't even at the scene, must be checked carefully before it is used as an affirmation and an accusation."

In 2000, when France 2 TV made international headlines with its exclusive video, Enderlin said he had 27 minutes of raw footage, most of which was withheld from the public because France 2 insisted it wanted to spare viewers the images of the dying child's agony.

Juffa claimed France 2 has recently, unofficially, admitted to three journalists that the cameraman, the sole eyewitness to the shooting despite the presence of many other cameramen, had changed his story. The cameraman, according to Juffa, retracted his sworn testimony about the child being killed by Israeli soldiers and about the raw footage showing the child in agony before death.

Juffa believes France 2 should immediately suspend the two journalists behind the report until a full and neutral investigation is completed. "We are not judges but journalists," he said, "but we believe that the people who staged this scene should be brought to justice because their pictures have caused many deaths by becoming a symbol of the intifada and the Israeli Army's violence. Many people have died in the name of Mohammed Al-Dura because of these pictures."

Juffa said he was surprised to find that instead of investigating the video, France 2 responded by attacking him. He said that France 2 has accused him of being a negationist, a revisionist, an extremist and a member of Israel's ultra right-wing.

"I am not part of the extreme right-wing, but that accusation does not answer or excuse the forgery," said Juffa.

Both Juffa and Karsenty said French media have united in refusing to publicize the evidence, by pressuring journalists who fear for their careers in a country where most television and radio journalism jobs are in the state media.

The only response to the mounting evidence against the infamous video has been the non-punitive reprimand of the French government's media regulatory council. The council published a mild statement in December asking French television to identify sources and exercise more caution in reporting on international conflicts in the future.

IT IS official: the French are a nation of depressed pessimists, wracked with self-doubt and unable to see a positive future.

This gloomy portrait of the current state of Gallic morale - or rather the lack of it - was made public yesterday in a damning report by France’s prefects, the country’s top administrators.

"The French no longer believe in anything," the report said. "That is the reason that the situation is relatively calm, for they believe that it is not even worthwhile expressing their opinions or trying to be heard any more."

The country’s 100 prefects went on to use the words "lifelessness", "resignation", "anxiety" and "pessimism" to describe the attitudes they believe prevail in France today.

The report, which is dated December 2004 but has only just been made public, would appear to be contradicted by the three days of strikes launched by public sector workers this week.

However, analysts point to the fact that disillusionment and apathy are so great that not even France’s formerly powerful unions were able to predict the turnout for the strike. Opinion polls show that 65 per cent of the French support the strikers, leading observers to say that the country is showing its discontent by proxy via the strikers.

"It’s a fact: France and the French are pessimists," said Alain Duhamel, a respected French commentator.

He said: "The French doubt themselves and worry about the future. They do so more than the citizens of neighbouring countries, even when those neighbouring countries are doing less well than we are and have a more negative future ahead.

"France has been anxious about its future, about its way of life, for the last 30 years, ever since the employment crisis and doubts about identity, ever since the absence of clear perspectives and collective projects."

Politicians agree that the French are particularly upset about the drop in their purchasing power, which has led to strong group pessimism even if individual confidence is quite high.

This fear for the country’s economic future is illustrated by the fact that the French are among the most assiduous savers in the world, putting aside an average of 16 per cent of their income.

Pierre Taribo, writing in L’Est Rיpublicain, agreed with Mr Duhamel. He wrote: "One is forced to say that the French no longer believe in very much. Confronted with the reality of an open economy, clearly showing less and less appetite for politics, they are disillusioned and doubt everything from Chirac to the government and the Right, which is accused of every ill, to the Left, which has no projects, and the unions, whose activism no longer inspires a reflex of blind adhesion."

All this gloom could have serious repercussions. Jacques Chirac’s centre-right government fears that widespread pessimism could have a negative effect on the referendum on the European Union constitution scheduled for later this year.

The prefects’ report also warned that it played into the hands of the extreme right-wing National Front party.

King George

When King George V died, we got a day off from school as a sign of
mourning. Palestine was then a part of the British Empire, which ruled
the country under a League of Nations mandate. To this very day, a
central street in Tel-Aviv, not far from my home, bears the name of King
George.
George V was followed (after a brief interlude) by George VI, who
was until recently the last George in our life. Now we have a new King
George, not British but American.

The relationship between the United States and Israel is difficult
to define. The USA has no official mandate over our country. It is not a
normal alliance between two nations. Neither is it a relationship between
a satellite and the master country.
Some people say, only half in jest, that the USA is an Israeli
colony. And indeed, in many respects it looks like that. President Bush
dances to Ariel Sharon's tune. Both Houses of Congress are totally
subservient to the Israeli right-wing - much more so than the Knesset. It
has been said that if the pro-Israeli lobby were to sponsor a resolution
on Capitol Hill calling for the abolition of the Ten Commandments, both
Houses of Congress would adopt it overwhelmingly. Every year Congress
confirms the payment of a massive tribute to Israel.
But others assert the reverse: that Israel is an American colony.
And indeed, that is also true in many respects. It is unthinkable for the
Israeli government to refuse a clear-cut request by the President of the
United States. America forbids Israel to sell an expensive intelligence-
gathering plane to China? Israel cancels the sale. America forbids a
large-scale military action, as happened last week in Gaza? No action.
America wants the Israeli economy to be managed according to American
precepts? No problem: an American (circumcised, to be sure) has just been
appointed as Governor of the Central Bank of Israel.
As a matter of fact, both versions are right: The USA is an Israeli
colony and Israel is an American colony. The relationship between the two
countries is a symbiosis, a term defined by the Oxford Dictionary as "an
association of two organisms living attached to each other or one within
the other" (from the Greek words for "living" and "together".)
Much has already been said about the origins of this symbiosis.
American Christian Zionism preceded the founding of the Jewish Zionist
organization. The American myth is almost identical with the Zionist
Israeli myth, both in content and symbolism. (The settlers fleeing from
persecution in their homelands, an empty country, pioneers conquering the
wilderness, the savage natives, etc.) Both are countries of immigration,
with all that this implies for good or ill. Both governments believe that
their interests coincide. On Independence Day in Israel, many American
flags are to be seen next to the Israeli ones - a phenomenon that is
without parallel in the world.
The inauguration of George Bush last week therefore had a special
significance for Israel. The state-controlled TV channel broadcast it
live. In many respects, the President of the United States is also the
King of Israel.

Long before Abraham Lincoln's Emancipation Proclamation, another major nation had been the first to end slavery in the territory it controlled: Britain. And unlike American slavery, essentially brought to an end through the Civil War, slavery in the British Empire ended as the result of a huge popular movement - whose early start, size and persistence dwarfed its counterpart in America. It's a story most in this country have long forgotten, although several generations of American slaves and their descendants knew it well.

The British antislavery movement burst into being in 1787. Up to that point, few people in England had spoken out on the subject. But within months after a firebrand organizer named Thomas Clarkson convened a 12-man abolition committee at a Quaker bookstore in London, agitation swept the country. Within a few years, more than 300,000 Britons were boycotting sugar, the major product of the British West Indian slave plantations. Nearly 400,000 signed petitions to Parliament demanding an end to the slave trade. Olaudah Equiano, a brilliant former slave, wrote a best-selling autobiography and embarked on a five-year speaking tour of the British Isles. Thomas Clarkson rode 35,000 miles on horseback, gathering witnesses for parliamentary hearings and setting up local antislavery committees. In 1792, the House of Commons became the first national legislative body in the world to vote to end the slave trade.

That ban, however, did not become law, because the House of Lords balked. Then Britain and France began two decades of war, and wars are always bad for progressive movements. Still, the abolitionists did not abandon hope. In the early 1800's Clarkson toured the country again, and in 1807 both houses of Parliament banned the slave trade.

With the death rate on plantations in the British West Indies very high, the abolitionists hoped that cutting off the supply of new slaves would quickly end British slavery itself. When this did not happen, Clarkson - now in his 60's - spent 13 months crisscrossing the country again, this time by stagecoach, in 1823 and 1824.

The next 10 years saw several new rounds of organizing: large petitions, great meetings, skillfully coordinated lobbying, a rare street demonstration and, to widespread male shock, the emergence of outspoken women abolitionists. In addition, there was the added pressure of a large, barely contained slave revolt in Jamaica. Finally, after months of acrimonious debate, in 1833 Parliament voted to phase out slavery throughout the empire. When freedom for all came, just after midnight on Aug. 1, 1838, a group of former slaves who were gathered in a Baptist church in Falmouth, Jamaica, placed a whip, chains and an iron punishment collar in a coffin, and buried it in the churchyard. Emancipation Day has been celebrated ever since.

PMW director briefs foreign ambassadors in Knesset

At the request of Diaspora Affairs Minister Natan Sharansky, PMW director
Itamar Marcus today briefed a group of 80 ambassadors and diplomats in the
Israeli Knesset about PMW's latest report on Palestinian Authority (PA)
promotion of genocide against Jews. This event comes a day after Marcus and
Minister Sharansky held two joint news conferences to present the report to
the Israeli and foreign media.

The report, Kill a Jew - Go To Heaven, written by Marcus and PMW associate
director Barbara Crook, examines the way in which the leadership of the PA
has taught, and continues to teach, an ideology of virulent hatred of Jews
and Israel that mandates the killing of Jews as a religious obligation. The
report documents how the PA has systematically built a three-tiered case
against Jewish existence, much as a prosecutor would build a legal case in
a court of law to demand a death sentence. At the briefing, Marcus
presented many examples from the PA-controlled print and broadcast media,
including numerous video excerpts, to show the systematic way in which this
hatred of Jews is promoted by the PA's religious, political and academic
elites, and taught through cultural, educational, religious and even
entertainment frameworks.

The session began with the recital of the E-l Malei Rachamim memorial prayer, and Prime Minister Sharon, Knesset Speaker Ruby Rivlin, and Diaspora Affairs Minister Natan Sharansky addressed the Knesset.

Invited guests included Holocaust survivors, Yad Vashem officials and foreign representatives.

Excerpts from PM Sharon's speech:

"The allies knew of the annihilation of the Jews. They knew and did nothing.
On April 19, 1943, the Bermuda Conference gathered, with the participation of representatives from Britain and the United States, to discuss saving the Jews of Europe. In fact, the participants did everything in their power to avoid dealing with the problem. All the suggestions for rescue operations that the Jewish organizations presented were rejected. They simply did not want to deal with it.

"The Bermuda Conference was nothing more than a continuation of the shocking story of the 'Ship of the Damned' - the Saint Louis - which set sail from Germany in 1939 with 1,000 Jews who succeeded in escaping from the Third Reich on board. The passengers knocked on the doors of Cuba and ports in the eastern United States, but were refused sanctuary and were forced to return to the shores of Europe. Most of them were murdered in the death camps.

"The leadership of the British Mandate displayed the same obtuseness and insensitivity by locking the gates to Israel to Jewish refugees who sought a haven in the Land of Israel. Thus were rejected the requests of the 769 passengers of the ship "Struma" who escaped from Europe - and all but one [of the passengers] found their death at sea.

"Throughout the war, nothing was done to stop the annihilation [of the Jewish people]. When, in the summer of 1944, the mass deportations in Hungary were carried out, the allies did not bomb the train tracks which led to Auschwitz from Hungary, nor the murder facilities in Birkenau, despite the fact that they had the ability to do so. Allied planes attacked targets near Auschwitz, but they refused to bomb the camp itself, in which 10,000 Jews were murdered daily. Thus were 618,000 Jews annihilated in a number of weeks - the Jews of Hungary.

"Mr. Speaker, the sad and horrible conclusion is that no one cared that Jews were being murdered...

"The State of Israel learned [the] lesson - and since its establishment, it has done its utmost to defend itself and its citizens, and provide a safe haven for any Jew, wherever he may be. We know that we can trust no one but ourselves.

"This phenomenon - of Jews defending themselves and fighting back - is an anathema in the side of the new anti-Semites. Legitimate steps of self-defense which Israel takes in its war against Palestinian terror - actions which any sovereign state is obligated to undertake to ensure the security of its citizens - are presented by those who hate Israel as aggressive, Nazi-like steps.

"...These days, the generation which was witness to the horrors is disappearing, and ignorance is increasing. Fewer people around the world have heard of the Holocaust or are aware of what happened in Auschwitz, and the manifestations of anti-Semitism are on the rise. 60 years after the liberation of Auschwitz, the evil which gave rise to the horror still exists - and still threatens us.

"...Israel is a very small country, blessed with talented and courageous people. However, it must always be remembered that this is the only place in the world where we, the Jews, have the right and the capability to defend ourselves, by ourselves. And we will never relinquish this. It is our historic responsibility. It is my personal historic responsibility."

Backing up Sharon's claims that the Allies could have bombed the train tracks leading to Auschwitz is none other than former World War II bomber and U.S. Presidential candidate (in 1972) George McGovern. Rafael Medoff and former Rep. Stephen Solarz of the David S. Wyman Institute for Holocaust Studies , in an op-ed published by Knight Ridder, wrote yesterday that McGovern met with interviewers from Israel Television and the Wyman Institute, and "recalled his days as the pilot of a B-24 Liberator in the 455th Bomb Group, targeting German synthetic-oil plants in occupied Poland - many of them within a few miles of the Auschwitz gas chambers."

"After the Allies gained control of the Foggia Air Base in Italy in December 1943," they wrote, "Auschwitz was for the first time within striking distance of Allied planes. In June 1944, U.S. diplomats and Jewish leaders in Switzerland received a detailed report about Auschwitz, prepared by two escapees. The escapees described the mass-murder facilities and drew diagrams showing where the gas chambers and crematoria were located. As a result, Jewish organizations repeatedly asked the Roosevelt administration to order the bombing of Auschwitz and the railroad lines leading to the camp. The War Department rejected the proposals as 'impracticable,' saying such raids would have required 'considerable diversion' of planes needed for the war effort... Ironically, military resources were diverted for various other nonmilitary reasons... Gen. George Patton even diverted U.S. troops to rescue 150 Lipizzaner horses in Austria..."

Medoff and Solarz write that McGovern called the 'diversion' argument just "a rationalization." In the summer and fall of 1944, they write, "the Allies repeatedly bombed the oil refineries near Auschwitz - at a time when hundreds of Jews were being gassed daily in the camp. On Dec. 26, for instance, McGovern's squadron dropped 50 tons of bombs on oil facilities in Monowitz, an industrial section of Auschwitz, located less than five miles from the site where 1.6 million people were murdered from 1942 to 1944."

McGovern's conclusion: "There is no question we should have attempted... to go after Auschwitz. There was a pretty good chance we could have blasted those rail lines off the face of the earth, which would have interrupted the flow of people to those death chambers, and we had a pretty good chance of knocking out those gas ovens... Franklin Roosevelt was a great man, and he was my political hero. But I think he made two great mistakes in World War II: [the internment of Japanese-Americans, and the decision] not to go after Auschwitz. ... G-d forgive us for that tragic miscalculation."

What Prime Minister Sharon said is true but it must be qualified and considered in the light of additional information.

2. Extracts from "The Tribes. The Israelite Origins of Western Peoples" pp.9-13
The Attitude of the Peoples to the Holocaust
Britain (more than any other nation apart from France) had accepted a good number of Jewish refugees but then decided to drastically reduce admission. Economic reasons, as well as anti-Semitism or the fear of arousing it, were among the reasons for these restrictions. Open or concealed hatred of the Jews was often a motivating factor all over the world in denying the Jews refuge. Every country on earth closed its doors against Jewish refugees. This policy continued during the Second World War to a degree. Some of the officials responsible knew that the results of this policy meant death for those of Jewish descent who fell into German hands but others were not so aware. Despite all this it is doubtful if anything really could have been done on a large scale other than defeat the Germans which is what was done. Claims to the contrary appear to be illusionary departures from the reality as it then was.
Claims against the Allies include the following: 1. They did not accept Jewish refugees before the War. 2. They did not bomb Auschwitz and the other camps. 3. They did not warn the Germans that atrocities would be punished. 4. They did not "barter" Jewish lives for goods when the Germans offered to do so towards the end of the War. 5. They closed the doors to Palestine. Some of these claims have something in them and some do not.
Concerning (1) they were not aware that the Germans were about to conquer Europe and kill all the Jews they could find. Perhaps they should have been but they were not and neither was anybody else, including most of the Jews in Europe itself. Before the War Jewish refugees from Germany usually managed to find refuge in other countries. Those who went to places that the Germans later conquered were killed but no-one foresaw this eventuality at the time.
2. Bombing Auschwitz and the camps (if indeed it was possible) underestimates the determination of the Germans to kill Jews at all costs and however they could.
3. Warnings not to harm the Jews were in fact issued in some cases but it was also feared that their results could be counter-productive. The conditions were those of total warfare and antisemitism was actually popular especially in Eastern Europe. In Hungary Roosevelt threatened to bomb Budapest if the persecution of the Jews did not cease and this threat influenced the Hungarian Government to lessen the persecution. Wallenstein of Sweden and Lotz of Switzerland in Hungary saved numerous Jews and they were acting on behalf of the USA in coordination with their own governments.
4. There was no real possibility of "bartering" Jewish lives for goods. Hitler would never have allowed it. Suggestions to the contrary by the Nazis appear to have been part of a German trick to sow discord between the Allies and Russia who already suspected the Allies of wanting to see Russia broken. The Germans were killing Jews even at great expense to their own war efforts.
5. The British restricted Jewish entry to Palestine because they feared Arab reactions. Jews who illegally attempted to reach Palestine were either allowed to stay in the Land of Israel or interned on Cyprus. A different policy could have saved more Jewish lives but how many is uncertain and those responsible were not necessarily aware of this possibility at the time. The measure of hostility towards the Jews from other peoples at that time is not appreciated. At the beginning of the War Turkey had instituted anti-Jewish measures but the usa pressured her to desist from them. Spain was neutral and allowed the entrance of refugees though at one stage she considered handing them over to Germany. A thinly veiled threat from Churchill caused the Spanish to think again. Things were done on behalf of the Jews. It may not have been enough but it was something and it was done by those who themselves were fighting for their own existence. Things were done and they were done mainly by the Western Allies whom we believe to constitute the Lost Ten Tribes of Israel. In the cases of not-totally Axis-dominated nations such as Hungary, Turkey, and Spain the Allies did exert effective pressure on behalf of the Jewish people.
The Germans and Austrians had began the Second World War and conquered most of continental Europe. They proceeded to exterminate the Jewish people, men, women, and children. They were helped to murder Jews by Ukrainians, Latvians, Lithuanians, Romanians, Croatians, and others. More than six million Jews were killed. In Poland some people rescued Jews, though the anti-German Polish resistance movements themselves frequently also murdered Jews fleeing from the Germans. This was done as a matter of policy and in some cases had priority over the struggle against Germany. After the War Poles who had helped rescue Jews often had to keep it secret lest their fellow citizens murder them or their kin4. This was not the case in Germany. The consistency of the German attitude was not always a conscious one. Nevertheless most Germans to some degree accepted the Nazi aims. In the Bulgarian parts of Bulgaria-proper the Jews were protected though the Jews of Bulgarian-Macedonia were handed over to German forces for extermination. In Western Europe the Danes, Belgians, Dutch, and French, at great risk to themselves, often helped Jews escape or gave them shelter, though in some of these countries the Germans had helpers in murdering the Jewish people. The Italians often quite heroically helped save Jews yet had allied themselves to Hitler and worked for a Nazi victory.

The British Saved Mankind and
Delivered the Jews from Destruction!
The British remained unconquered and the only determined unbeaten opponent of the Germans, from the beginning of the War until its end, was Great Britain and Her Dominions. At one stage Britain (and her "daughter" Dominions) stood alone against the victorious conquering Germans. The British could have made a separate peace on favorable terms with Germany but even if the British Government had wanted to (and it did not) the British people would not accept anything less than continued struggle for complete victory. The anti-Jewish policies of the Nazis even from before the beginning of the War was the major single factor in turning British public opinion against Germany5. The usa actively supported Britain on the material level turning itself into one vast hinterland-producing area for the British effort. The USA and Russia after being attacked joined Britain against Germany. Ultimately Great Britain, Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, and Canada, together with the USA and USSR, defeated Germany and the German allies, Italy, Croatia, Hungary, Rumania, and the Baltic States. Despite everything, those Jews who did survive owe their lives, in a sense, to the Allies' victory.

The Betrayal of the Jews
Both before the War and during it, it may have been possible to save the lives of a more Jewish refugees than actually were saved if there had been somewhere to settle them in. France, Britain and the usa received many and most other places very little. Even Britain and the usa did not receive as many as they could have. Australia and South Africa closed their doors. After the war these same places (Australia, New Zealand, Canada, the USA, Britain, etc.) were often enthusiastic (and at other times at least willing) in re-settling millions of non-Jewish refugees and immigrants from Russia, the Ukraine, Latvia, Lithuania, Hungary, Germany, Italy, Pakistan, Africa, Asia, and so on. From reading accounts and official reports concerning the fate of the Jews during the Holocaust years when the Jews needed to be helped an unmistakable impression is received. Some of the authorities in potential host countries would rather have left the Jews to their fate than help them, especially if help meant accepting them into their own countries6. Jews were not welcome (to say the least) in several cases. This throws a serious question on the degree of Israelite ancestry claimable by the said nations. It does not nullify such claims but it means that they must be qualified and the presence of non-Israelite elements existing alongside the Israelite ones seriously taken into consideration! On the other hand some effective policies were undertaken. The positive actions on behalf of the Jews were nearly always due to people identified in this work as coming from "Lost Ten Tribes" Israelite stock. In France people of Protestant Huguenot descent were especially active in doing all that they could to rescue Jews and whole villages participated at great risk to themselves. The fact that the war against the Nazi evil was fought, maintained, and eventually won was also due mainly to people identified by us as descended from Israelites. Despite everything, one aspect of the whole War effort had the goal to ensure Jewish survival.

All of the many studies which criticize the Allies (and the Jewish communities of the democracies) for having failed to rescue Jews during the holocaust are inaccurate and misleading, their arguments illogical and ahistorical.”
Rubinstein points out that the Nazis were implacably determined to destroy the Jews and nothing much could have been done to stop them. Rubinstein has a point of view that should be considered along with the other factors. On some points he may be mistaken but on the whole he appears to be historically correct. The depth of the German and East European determination to wipe out the Jewish race is not sufficiently realized. Some of the claimed possibilities for saving Jews were in practice non-existent. Bombing the concentration camps if it had have been possible and if it had have been done may have even speeded up the extermination process!

“Yet hatred of the Jews was Hitler's central conviction: sometimes it even seems to me that everything else was merely camouflage for this real motivating factor...Hitler was even prepared to risk his plans of conquest for the sake of that mania for extermination...I can still recall the astonishment with which I read the final sentence of his testament. In the midst of an apocalyptic doom it attempted to commit us all to a miserable hatred of the Jews.”

Footnote © The most traumatic event in this regard was probably the "Struma" affair. The Struma was an unseaworthy boat into which 769 Jewish refugees had been crammed. They were fleeing from Romania where the local populace had turned almost "cannibalistic" in its treatment of the Jews. The boat docked near Istanbul and the passengers requested entry visas to Palestine but were refused. The Turks then cast the boat adrift and refused help even though the British had relented and agreed to take in the children. The boat was then sunk by a Soviet submarine in February, 1942. Only two of the passengers reached shore one of whom was shot by the Turks and the other survived. At the time it was not known that the Soviets were responsible for sinking the ship nor was the attitude of the Turks publicized. In the eyes of many Jews in Palestine the British were responsible as in some way they may well have been. For details see, "Death on the Black Sea. At a press conference timed to coincide with events marking the 60th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz, Diaspora Affairs Minister Natan Sharansky will on Tuesday assert that the Palestinian Authority, even under new chairman Mahmoud Abbas, is engaged in the "promotion of genocide" against the Jewish people.

The "Kill a Jew Go to Heaven" presentation, compiled by Palestinian Media Watch, an Israel-based organization that monitors incitement in Palestinian society, and distributed under Sharansky's auspices, accuses the Palestinian media of dehumanizing Jews similar to ways the Nazis did.

A fundamental message broadcast in sermons, academic discourse and even children's shows, according to report co-author Itamar Marcus, is that "the Jews are an evil force, and it's inherent to the Jews, and therefore they have to be killed."

In the run-up to the PA election on January 9, Abbas met with the head of the Palestinian Broadcasting Authority and asked him to check all programs aired on PA television to prevent the broadcast of inciting material. Since then, Marcus said that nationalistic programming calling for violence against Israel has decreased somewhat, but that anti-Semitic rhetoric has remained unabated.

He pointed to January 14, when he said an imam gave a sermon declaring, "The days of the pilgrimage to Mecca remind the Muslim of the connection to his history and remind him of his past glory and the lowliness of the Jews, who today rule the world; how Muhammad expelled them from Medina in retribution for their actions and their hostility and their corruption, and not on false charges, not unjustly. No, it was retribution for their hostility toward Islam."

It is important to document this phenomenon, he said, because many people view the Israeli-Palestinian conflict as centered on political issues, when the Palestinians have tied redemption to killing Jews. "It's not connected to borders, it's not connected to compromise, and no compromise will be reached [once]it's a battle of God against the Jews."

"As in Nazi Germany, there is an entire 'culture of hatred' in Palestinian society today, from textbooks to crossword puzzles, from day camps to TV music videos," Sharansky charged in a statement issued by his office ahead of the press conference. "Calling for the murder of Jews, as Jews, is the end result."

The presentation comes ahead of Israel's National Day Against Anti-Semitism on Thursday and the same day's ceremonies at Auschwitz. It will be made available in English as well as Hebrew to engage the international community.

"The whole world has to be aware of anti-Semitism, because it isn't just the problem of the Jews. It's the problem of any democratic society," a Sharansky aide said. "The world has to understand what we are dealing with. It's not only whether there was a bombing yesterday or not. If you don't change the atmosphere in books or on TV, it won't be enough."

[] A new book by an American military journalist and commentator reveals the extent of the US military presence on Israeli soil.
“Code Names,” by William M. Arkin, exposes information about at least five US Army bases at secret locations throughout the Jewish State, including one at Ben Gurion Airport and another in Herzliya Pituah. The book also provides a long list of code names describing joint military operations between Israel and America.

Arkin is an independent journalist and military commentator for NBC and a former intelligence analyst for US ground forces. A front-page story in “The New York Times,” based on one of the book’s revelations has given the book broad publicity and granted it wide legitimacy.

Late Republican Senator Jesse Helms used to call Israel “America’s aircraft carrier in the Middle East,” when explaining why the US viewed Israel as such a strategic ally, saying that the military foothold in the region offered by the Jewish State alone justified the military aid that the US grants Israel every year. The new revelations also act to weaken the argument for Israeli policy decisions based on "American pressure."

Arkin claims that the officially "non-existent" sites across Israel contain $500 million worth of ammunition the United States keeps in Israel for wartime contingencies. The bases, called Sites 51, 53, 54, 55 and 56 don't appear on any maps and their specific locations are classified and highly sensitive.

“It's not just munitions,” Arkin wrote in the Washington Post before the release of his book. “The United States has ‘prepositioned’ vehicles, military equipment, even a 500-bed hospital, for US Marines, Special Forces, and Air Force fighter and bomber aircraft at at least six sites in Israel, all part of what is antiseptically described as ‘US-Israel strategic cooperation.’"

Israel is not the only country in the region to host US military bases, though. There are American military facilities in Egypt, Jordan, Saudi Arabia, Oman, and the Gulf states, as well.

or diminish its damage, but concur with former Israeli Parliament Member and
rabbi, Meir Kahane, who delivered a scathing indictment against AMERICAN JEWS

The article says that while all of of Jerusalem is vulnerable the Old City and the neighborhoods on the
eastern (Mainly Arab) side are especially so "both because of the type of soil, which exacerbates the effects of earthquakes
and because of an abundance of old structures that can collapse and turn into death traps".
The last major earthquake was in 1926 registered 6.5 on the Richter Scale. It was centered around the Daima Bridge over the
River Jordan but caused extensive damage in the Jerusalem area.
"If an earthquake as struck a place one it is likely to strike there again".
A previous quake in 1837 wiped out 20 per cent of the population of Safed in the Upper Galilee. Its magnitude was 6.6.
Jerusalem is situated on the Jordan Valley Rift which is at a junction of two of the earth's continental plates and is particularly vulnerable.
Last Shabbat there was a very minor quake in the northern Jerusalem area that was not noticed by most of us.
It appears to not be a question of whether but rather of when.

[]ERUSALEM, Jan. 31 - At least 15,000 Ethiopian Jews, many living in hovels near the Israeli Embassy in Addis Ababa, will be brought to Israel by the end of 2007 under an accelerated immigration process, the Israeli government said Monday.

The decision is intended to help settle a long-running question over the status of an Ethiopian community known as the Falash Mura.

Close to 100,000 Ethiopian Jews have immigrated to Israel since the mid-1980's, but for many years, Israel was unable to decide on how to deal with one specific group, the Falash Mura. The Falash Mura say they are descendants of Ethiopian Jews who converted to Christianity many years ago, often through coercion, but have resumed practicing Judaism.

During the 1990's, some Israeli authorities questioned the authenticity of the community's Jewish roots. Israeli officials also expressed concerns that they would be confronted by large numbers of impoverished Ethiopians claiming Jewish ancestry and seeking to immigrate.

Three years ago, the government sent a prominent rabbi to consider the case of the Falash Mura, and he reported solid evidence of their Jewish lineage. The government decided in February 2003 that all the Falash Mura who could document Jewish ancestry on their mother's side would be allowed into Israel.

About 15,000 to 20,000 Falash Mura are believed to fall into that category, according to the government and supporters of the Falash Mura. But Israel has been allowing only 300 to enter each month.

In Addis Ababa, thousands of the Falash Mura have moved into hovels on a hillside near the Israeli Embassy. Thousands more are in Gondar, in the north.

"We are grateful to God," Meles Mandefro, a Falash Mura, said in a telephone interview. "The whole community will be delighted when they hear this." Mr. Mandefro left his farmland and moved to Addis Ababa, where he has been waiting nearly a decade with his wife and five children. Many of their relatives are already in Israel.

[] The Knesset will mark the 60th anniversary of the disappearance of Raoul Wallenberg, who saved 100,000 Jews from the Nazis, with a special session on Tuesday.
Wallenberg was a Swedish diplomat in the early 1940's who is credited with saving over 100,000 Hungarian Jews by granting them visas and removing them from German deportations to the death camps. On Jan. 17, 1945, he was invited to meet with the Russians, who promptly arrested him; he was never seen again in the outside world.

UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan is married to Wallenberg's niece, who visited Israel in March 1998. Then-MK Alex Lubotsky showed her around, and later said, "I wanted to show my great appreciation for her uncle's activities. She was visibly moved by this, and when I told her of the many streets named after him in Israel and the like, she was excited to learn that her uncle was so recognized and appreciated in Israel."

Israeli-British trade has been on an upward swing now for many
years, and in 2004 reached new heights. Britain today is Israel's third
largest trading partner behind the United States and Germany. Israeli
exports to Britain in 2004 reached almost 1.5 billion dollars - an increase
of 19 percent on the previous year - while imports from Britain stand today
at 2.5 billion dollars, an increase of 9 percent on 2003. Cooperation
between the Tel Aviv and London stock exchanges is growing and Israeli
companies are increasingly using London's capital markets to raise money for
their activities.

In 2004, 420 Israeli hi-tech companies raised almost
one and a half billion dollars in local and foreign venture capital, an
increase of 45 percent from the previous year, with much of this increase
coming from the London markets. Last year, five Israeli companies floated on
the London exchanges - a great achievement in itself - and I understand from
our Embassy in London, that perhaps twice as many Israeli companies are
scheduled to go public in London in 2005.

Israel sees Britain as a natural and close partner
in the effort to bring peace, security and prosperity to our people and to
the Middle East. Beyond our important trade and commercial relations, our
two countries share a common commitment to the values of democracy, human
rights, the rule of law and basic freedoms. We share the belief that these
things are worth promoting, and worth defending. Under the leadership of
Prime Minister Blair, Britain has been a strong advocate of Israel's right
to defend itself against terror. In this time, Britain's practical
contribution to security-related issues on the ground, has also grown.

Indeed, at the governmental level, despite some
differences of opinion, Israel and Britain have found in recent years a
common language which has allowed us to enhance and deepen our cooperation
in many important fields, to the mutual benefit of both countries. At the
same time, at the public level, Israel's standing in Britain is suffering.

No, Eurabia does not mean a strong influx of Arab-Muslim immigrants into European countries, though it does include demographic input. Eurabia does not mean the European Union after Turkey has been admitted, though welcoming Turkey with its 80 million Muslim citizens, fruitful and multiplying, is part of the plan for Eurabia. Eurabia is an ambitious project of fusion between the E.U. and the Arab world, beginning with the Mediterranean rim countries, and with no end in sight.

In her recently published "Eurabia: The Euro-Arab Axis," the Egyptian born historian Bat Ye'or, a pioneer in the study of jihad, dhimmitude, and Eurabia, documents the system of secret conferences, negotiations, agreements, and directives elaborated since the early 1970s, which has resulted in the construction of Eurabia and the forging of a joint foreign policy based on hostility against Israel and hostile competition with America.

Today, the architects of Eurabia have moved from secret diplomacy to unashamed declaration of their ambitions, as exemplified in "Dialogue Between Peoples and Cultures in the Euro-Mediterranean Area," a curious report drafted by the High-Level Advisory Group named by Romano Prodi, the European Commission President at the time, and published in December 2003.

Though purportedly involving the entire Mediterranean rim, the dialogue is clearly aimed at the Arab-Muslim states of North Africa. Greece and Europe's Greek heritage are never mentioned, Judeo-Christian roots are eschewed, Israel is reduced to the guilty party in the Middle East conflict, leaving Europe and the Maghreb free to recombine the two halves of a shared history in a marriage made in secular heaven.

Making the best of both worlds, Euro-Med dialogue will bring together the vibrant youth of the Mediterranean and a "cynical ageing" Europe rich in capital and employment opportunities. Lest the South look askance at the E.U.'s eastward enlargement, the advisory group casts it in a friendly light. The E.U. is taking steps in the right direction by incorporating countries with Orthodox Christian traditions that "sometimes lead to behavior which is surprisingly similar with that of Islam," encompassing Bulgaria with its 10% Muslim population, then Bosnia-Herzegovina with its Muslim majority, and Turkey with its "'historically' European Islam." The end result will be a European Islam that will "dispel the image of a rampant Islamisation of Europe."
Though all cultures are equal, the report pinpoints two troublemakers.

Righteous Gentile Honored Posthumously in Yad Vashem

[] A ceremony posthumously honoring Giovanni Palatucci of Italy as a Righteous Gentile took place at Yad Vashem today. Italian Interior Minister Giuseppe Pisanu took part.
The Yad Vashem Holocaust Memorial Museum reports that Giovanni Palatucci served as commissioner in the office for foreigners in the police headquarters of the north Italian town of Fiume (today located in Croatia). Beginning at the end of 1938, he tried to prevent the implementation of the race laws enacted against the Jews by the Italian fascist regime.

In March 1939, Palatucci learned of more than 800 Jewish refugees who were set to sail to Palestine via Fiume. While collaborators with the Nazi regime hoped to waylay the ship and send the refugees back to Germany, Palatucci alerted the passengers and they safely reached southern Italy.

With the outbreak of World War II, Palatucci's activities on behalf of the Jews accelerated. He provided residency permits, and tried to provide hiding places, food and money for them as well. When the Germans invaded Italy in September 1943 and occupied Fiume, Palatucci's efforts to save Jews became especially dangerous. Nevertheless, he took added steps to save the local Jews of Fiume and the refugees who had joined them, providing false papers to any Jew who required them.

In September 1944, someone informed on him, leading to his arrest by the Gestapo and his sentencing to death. Instead of being shot, however, his sentence was commuted to exile and he was sent to the Dachau camp, where he died four months later in February 1945 at the age of 36.

After the war, the Group of Italian Jewish Communities presented Palatucci's family with a Gold Medal in appreciation for his actions. In September 1990, Palatucci was posthumously recognized by Yad Vashem as a Righteous Among the Nations. Because he had no living relatives at the time of his recognition, the medal and certificate were kept by Yad Vashem. At the request of the Italian police, it was presented today to Italian Police Commissioner Giovanni De Gennaro.

Half of Released Terrorists Return to Terror
With a ministerial committee set to decide Sunday which Palestinian terrorists to free as a gesture to Abu Mazen, a new study shows that half of released Arab terrorists return to their evil ways.
A booklet published by journalist Boaz HaEtzni and others includes warnings and protests by public and military figures who say that releasing prisoners is dangerous from several standpoints:
* It places the lives of Israel's citizens in certain danger
* It harms the IDF's deterrence effect
* It strengthens both the motivation and capabilities of the terror organizations
* It weakens Israel's moral stance against terrorists and those who shelter them.

"From 1985 until now," the booklet states, "Israel has released thousands of Palestinian terrorists in various prisoner exchanges. Not one of them underwent a test to determine if he will continue to endanger us or not."

"We have gathered some of the results of past prisoner releases," HaEtzni explained, "and we show that waves of terrorism have been ignited as a result. According to authorized data, some 50% of the released terrorists returned to terrorism after their release."

"Our purpose in publicizing this report," he says, "is to warn those who release terrorists that every other terrorist to be released is expected to endanger us again!"

"Those who must make this decision," the booklet states, "should be aware that the eyes of women, children, babies, elderly, new immigrants and IDF soldiers who were murdered by terrorists released by Israel will be upon you. If the government hadn't decided to release them, and if the President had not signed their pardon, and if the Supreme Court had not refrained from preventing the release, these people would have been with us today."

Though the public and ministerial debate is focused on the question of whether to release murderers or not, many relatives of terror victims say no terrorists at all should be released. Aryeh Bachrach, whose 18-year-old son Ohad was murdered by Arab terrorists almost a decade ago, says there is no difference between terrorists who have murdered and those who did not succeed in their goal.

"Our organization [Almagor] has lists of terrorists released without 'blood on their hands'," Bachrach said, "whose hands became full of blood afterwards. If they have no blood on their hands, it means they didn't succeed the first time, and they'll simply try again."

The ministerial committee comprises Ministers Sharon, Mofaz, Peres, Olmert, Netanyahu, Ramon, Livny, and Ezra.

2. Rabbi Obadiah Yosef Criticises the USA over Pollard and Requested Release of Palestinian Prisoners

Background: In the last few days great pressure has been placed on the Israeli Government to release hundreds of Palestinian prisoners
who were involved in terrorist activities. Some of the terrorists had actually perpetrated murders and woundings and others were in the
process of planning to do so. Based on common sense and past experience a good proportion of these prisoners will set about
attempts to kill as many Jews as they can as soon as they are able.

Jonathan Pollard as far as we know was accused of giving secrets to Israel and also blamed for
damage to American security for which other operatives were actually responsible.
He was not given a fair trial.
The case of Pollard was apparently used by elements in the US Security
apparatus for the intensifying of anti-Semitic attitudes and policies and also to cover up the crimes of others.
