2. The Family of Esau
Esau married Adah or Basemath, the daughter of Elon the Hittite, and Aholibamah,
the daughter of Anah the Hivite. Esau also married Mahalath daughter of Ishmael
and sister of Nebaioth (Genesis 28:1-9). Esau therefore merged with Canaanite (Hittitie
and Hivite) and Arab stock.
Esau was known also as Edom. They dwelt at first in Mount Seir where previously
had been the Horite.
Esau had five sons: Eliphaz, Reuel, Jeush, Jalam and Korah (Genesis 36:4-5).
Eliphaz and his sons Teman and Amalek were especially important.
[Genesis 36:1] NOW THESE ARE THE GENERATIONS OF ESAU, WHO IS
EDOM.
[Genesis 36:2] ESAU TOOK HIS WIVES OF THE DAUGHTERS OF CANAAN; ADAH THE DAUGHTER
OF ELON THE HITTITE, AND AHOLIBAMAH THE DAUGHTER OF ANAH THE DAUGHTER OF ZIBEON
THE HIVITE;
Craig White (The Great German Nation:
Origins and Destiny p.124 ff) showed links between Prussia-Germany and the
Hittites.
In Genesis 26:34-35 the women are given
different names.
Genesis 26:34] AND ESAU WAS FORTY YEARS OLD WHEN HE TOOK TO WIFE JUDITH THE
DAUGHTER OF BEERI THE HITTITE, AND BASHEMATH THE DAUGHTER OF ELON THE HITTITE:
Esau intermarried with Hittites and with
others. The Hittites had pockets in the land of Israel, in Syria, and in
present-day Turkey. Sayce
believed there were two kinds of Hittite, one a "Nordic" type and the other
"Mongolian". Many researchers see a resemblance in physical features between
the Hittites as they were depicted in Ancient Times and some of the present-day
Armenians.
[Genesis 26:35] WHICH WERE A GRIEF OF MIND UNTO ISAAC AND TO REBEKAH.
He took unsuitable women that were not
of his own kind and this caused grief. Sometimes this can be done and sometimes
not. The bottom line depends on the consequences.
ADAH
THE DAUGHTER OF ELON
THE HITTITE is considered the same as
BASHEMATH
THE DAUGHTER OF ELON
THE HITTITE.
AHOLIBAMAH
THE DAUGHTER OF ANAH
THE DAUGHTER OF ZIBEON
THE HIVITE
is considered the same as JUDITH THE DAUGHTER OF
BEERI
THE HITTITE.
The fathers of these women were apparently important local princes and
well-known. The Hittites and
Hivites were a related people and
we find the nations of Canaan having their specific Canaanite Tribal allocation
switched around elsewhere in Scripture. The
Hivities
could also be referred to as
Horites. The
Horites
were considered an Indo-European speaking people whose center was in
Anatolia
(present-day Turkey) as well as having offshoots to the east and to the south.
Zibeon
the Hivi
may well have been made ruler over a Hittite group and then received the name
Beeri.
In Europe kings and queens at the time of their coronation upon occasion took on
new names. The Pope when receiving his office chooses a name for himself by
which henceforth he will be referred to.
[Genesis 36:3] AND BASHEMATH ISHMAEL'S DAUGHTER, SISTER OF NEBAJOTH.
In Genesis 28:9 she is given the name
MAHALATH.
Different explanations are given for these changes of name. This is not an
infrequent occurrence in Scripture.
NEBAJOTH
son of Ishmael is considered the ancestor of the
Nabatean
Arabs who at one stage established an impressive desert-based civilization to
the south of Judah.
The marriage of Esau to a daughter of
Ishmael was said to symbolize the attempted union of Edom and Ishmael in the
Latter Days envisaged in the Book of Daniel.

[Genesis 36:4] AND ADAH BARE TO ESAU ELIPHAZ; AND BASHEMATH BARE REUEL;
The name "Eliphaz"
means God is strong. Eliphaz
by some of the Sages is identified with
Eliphaz
the Temenite
the companion of Job (Job 2:11).
Eliphaz according to tradition
was at first an evil person but repented and became saintly. He was considered
one of the seven prophets that emerged from non-Israelite Gentile populations
(Baba Kama
15;b). Eliphaz
represents a portion of Edom that will repent in the End Times.
The name REUEL
means "Friend of God".
[Genesis 36:5] AND AHOLIBAMAH BARE JEUSH, AND JAALAM, AND KORAH: THESE ARE THE
SONS OF ESAU, WHICH WERE BORN UNTO HIM IN THE LAND OF
CANAAN.
KORAH
was also the name of a son of Levi whose family became an important clan of
Levites in the Israelite Nation. This should warn us about reading to much into
similarity or identity of names.
[Genesis 36:6] AND ESAU TOOK HIS WIVES, AND HIS SONS, AND HIS DAUGHTERS, AND ALL
THE PERSONS OF HIS HOUSE, AND HIS CATTLE, AND ALL HIS BEASTS, AND ALL HIS
SUBSTANCE, WHICH HE HAD GOT IN THE LAND OF CANAAN; AND WENT INTO THE COUNTRY
FROM THE FACE OF HIS BROTHER JACOB.
[Genesis 36:7] FOR THEIR RICHES WERE MORE THAN THAT THEY MIGHT DWELL TOGETHER;
AND THE LAND WHEREIN THEY WERE STRANGERS COULD NOT BEAR THEM BECAUSE OF THEIR
CATTLE.
[Genesis 36:8] THUS DWELT ESAU IN MOUNT SEIR: ESAU IS EDOM.
[Genesis 36:9] AND THESE ARE THE GENERATIONS OF ESAU THE FATHER OF THE EDOMITES
IN MOUNT SEIR:
[Genesis 36:10] THESE ARE THE NAMES OF ESAU'S SONS; ELIPHAZ THE SON OF ADAH THE
WIFE OF ESAU, REUEL THE SON OF BASHEMATH THE WIFE OF ESAU.
[Genesis 36:11] AND THE SONS OF ELIPHAZ WERE TEMAN, OMAR, ZEPHO, AND GATAM, AND
KENAZ.
Teman
is a name that occurs frequently in Ancient History.

"Teman" is used as a synonym for Edom itself
(Amos i. 12; Obad. 9; comp. Jer. xlix. 20, 22; Hab. iii. 3). The Temanites were
famed for their wisdom (Jer. xlix. 7; Baruch iii. 22); Eliphaz, the oldest and
wisest of the friends of Job, is described as a member of this tribe (Job ii. 11
et passim).
Teman is referred to in Obad. 9 as a part of the mount of Esau, while Amos i. 12
mentions it in connection with the Edomitic "palaces of Bozrah"; Ezek. xxv. 13
speaks of it in contrast to the southern boundary Dedan. The "Onomasticon" of
Eusebius (260, 155) mentions a region called Thaiman, in Gebalene (the Gebal of
Ps. lxxxiii. 8 [A. V. 7]), and thus in the district of Petra, noting also an
East Teman, a town with a Roman garrison fifteen (according to Jerome, five)

In Greek Mythology
Temenus
(descended from Heracles) gave rise to the:

Temenidae,
being expelled from Argos, are said to have founded the kingdom of Macedonia,
whence the kings of Macedonia called themselves
Temenidae.

According to tradition the descendants
of Edom went to Italy, settled in the south and then founded Rome.
In Greek Mythology we have:

Idomeneus

Edom]. He went to Italy, where he settled in
Calabria,
and built a temple to Athena. From thence he is said to have again migrated to
Colophon, on the coast of Asia, to have settled near the temple of the
Clarian
Apollo, and to have been buried on Mount
Cercaphus.

KENAZ
is also the name of a Canaanite People known from the time of Abraham (Genesis
15:19) and later of an Israelite clan (Numbers 32:12) that eventually in the
south of Judah.
Certain secular scholars along with racist Jew-haters claim that these were all
one people and that Judah absorbed them into the Jewish
population. It does happen in Scripture that identity or close similarity of
name presage future unification and assimilation. This does not seem to be the
case here. The question will be discussed in our article on Esau and Judah.
[Genesis 36:12] AND TIMNA WAS CONCUBINE TO ELIPHAZ ESAU'S SON; AND SHE BARE TO
ELIPHAZ AMALEK: THESE WERE THE SONS OF ADAH ESAU'S WIFE.
Amalek
is considered the arch-enemy of Judah and Israel (Exodus 17:9-16 Deuteronomy
25:17-19).
In (Arabic: amliq)
is the singular of giant "suggesting the sons of this tribe were known for being
unusually tall."
Hitler considered himself a descendants of giants (even though he himself was
only 5 feet 8 inches which is average) and many consider Hitler to have been a
descendants of Amalek.
Some commentators (e.g. Iben
Ezra) say that two different peoples were named
Amalek
and only one of them is the one that Israel is commanded to treat as an enemy.
Agag
(Num. 24:7; 1 Sam. 15:8) was a traditional name or title for the kings of
Amelak.
Haman
who in the Book of Esther attempts to exterminate the Jews was a descendant of
Agag.
[Genesis 36:13] AND THESE ARE THE SONS OF REUEL; NAHATH, AND ZERAH, SHAMMAH,
AND MIZZAH: THESE WERE THE SONS OF BASHEMATH ESAU'S
WIFE.
[Genesis 36:14] AND THESE WERE THE SONS OF AHOLIBAMAH, THE DAUGHTER OF ANAH THE
DAUGHTER OF ZIBEON, ESAU'S WIFE: AND SHE BARE TO ESAU JEUSH, AND JAALAM, AND
KORAH.
[Genesis 36:15] THESE WERE DUKES OF THE SONS OF ESAU: THE SONS OF ELIPHAZ THE
FIRSTBORN SON OF ESAU; DUKE TEMAN, DUKE OMAR, DUKE ZEPHO, DUKE KENAZ,
Duke in Hebrew is
Aluph
meaning general or commander.
"Aluph"
is from the root "aleph" connoting train, teach, assist. The English word "help"
may come from this root.
Traditionally part of Edom would have rulers who were not really hereditary.
Edom is identified with Rome and Germany and other places in Europe. Rome was
ruled by Caesars who are referred to in denigration in the Talmud because they
were homosexual or bi-sexual and because they were not hereditary. It is
interesting the Mussolini was called Il Duce or The Duke. Mussolini the fascist
leader of Italy in the Second World War is not taken seriously by historians
these days. This is deceptive. Mussolini set the tone. He was the model for all
the others. Hitler and all his friends imitated Mussolini who in the beginning
made quite an impression.
It is also interesting that Italy, Germany, and Japan, together with Hungary,
Austria, and Rumania did get together and try to take over the world.
"Duke" derives from the Latin "Dux" meaning leader. This is a good equivalent to
"Aluph".
The leadership or "frueher"
principle was very important in fascist and Germanic-Nazi thinking and quite
effective. It must have reflected some deep aspect of the peoples it was applied
to and utilized by.
The sages said that these "Dukes" (aluphim)
were the local rulers of different principalities who ruled during their
lifetime but did not necessarily pass their
rulership
onto the children.
They were also associated with homosexual tendencies.
[Genesis 36:16] DUKE KORAH, DUKE GATAM, AND DUKE AMALEK: THESE ARE THE DUKES
THAT CAME OF ELIPHAZ IN THE LAND OF EDOM; THESE WERE THE SONS OF ADAH.
[Genesis 36:17] AND THESE ARE THE SONS OF REUEL ESAU'S SON; DUKE NAHATH, DUKE
ZERAH, DUKE SHAMMAH, DUKE MIZZAH: THESE ARE THE DUKES THAT CAME OF REUEL IN THE
LAND OF EDOM; THESE ARE THE SONS OF BASHEMATH ESAU'S WIFE.
[Genesis 36:18] AND THESE ARE THE SONS OF AHOLIBAMAH ESAU'S WIFE; DUKE JEUSH,
DUKE JAALAM, DUKE KORAH: THESE WERE THE DUKES THAT CAME OF AHOLIBAMAH THE
DAUGHTER OF ANAH, ESAU'S WIFE.
[Genesis 36:19] THESE ARE THE SONS OF ESAU, WHO IS EDOM, AND THESE ARE THEIR
DUKES.
Descendants of Esau became some of the
greatest soldiers and conquerors who ever lived. Others also hated them but
their over-all effect was to civilize and elevate humankind.
[Genesis 36:20] THESE ARE THE SONS OF SEIR THE HORITE, WHO INHABITED THE LAND;
LOTAN, AND SHOBAL, AND ZIBEON, AND ANAH,
The
Horites
of Seir
intermingled with the Edomites
and became one nation.
Horites
are otherwise known as Hurrians.
They are recorded all over the Ancient Middle East. They also went to Europe.
Perhaps where the Hurrians
went so did Edom? Why else would the Torah go to such length to link them with
Edom and give their genealogies?
Herman Howe, 1914-1997,"A Compendiuum of World History", 1962,section 1 p.198 ff)
identified Shobal
with Hispal, son of Hercules, in Spanish tradition. Hispal built the city
Hispalis,
later known as Sepila,
now Seville. When the existence of Japan first became known to the West there
were Spanish authors who fancied an ancient kinship between the Japanese and
themselves. This has lead to some scholars (e.g. Craig White) believing in both
an eastern as well as a western
Tarshish though in principal Tarshish was located on the Atlantic Coast of the Iberian Peninsula.
[Genesis 36:21] AND DISHON, AND EZER, AND DISHAN: THESE ARE THE DUKES OF THE
HORITES, THE CHILDREN OF SEIR IN THE LAND OF EDOM.

It appears that Edom intermarried with several different peoples and that is why his descendants may be of all different types?
There are some Identity people who claim the Jews are
Edomites
but they themselves probably are. They fit the profile better. They should be
proud of it however.
Being an Edomite
should not be considered a negative quality.
[Genesis 36:22] AND THE CHILDREN OF LOTAN WERE HORI AND HEMAM; AND LOTAN'S
SISTER WAS TIMNA.
[Genesis 36:23] AND THE CHILDREN OF SHOBAL WERE THESE; ALVAN, AND MANAHATH, AND
EBAL, SHEPHO, AND ONAM.
[Genesis 36:24] AND THESE ARE THE CHILDREN OF ZIBEON; BOTH AJAH, AND ANAH: THIS
WAS THAT ANAH THAT FOUND THE MULES IN THE WILDERNESS, AS HE FED THE ASSES OF
ZIBEON HIS FATHER.
Anah
according to the simple import of the above verse merely found the mules in the
wilderness. Mules are a cross between horses and donkeys. The Sages however
suggested that something of greater significance was behind this and that
Anah
had been instrumental in bringing the birth of the mules about and in general
was associated with the cross breeding of different kinds.
Attempts at breeding,
cross-breeding, and superior breeding (eugenics etc) are indeed sometimes to be
associated with Edomite-like
types.
Despite protestations of concern for unfortunate women some aspects of abortion policy may have
a eugenic-orientated agenda.
The Nazis believed in a super race and introduced human stock from all
over Europe to further its production. SS stud farms using SS males and mainly
Norwegian adolescent maidens who had been duped attempted to breed a superior type of human being
but without much success.
In fact just the opposite. The standard of offspring was said to ahve been problematic!
Hitler was prepared to cull
four out of every five Germans.
Euthanasia
or the elimination of what were considered worthless negative human beings was
taken seriously.
400,000 Germans were sterilized mostly in the period 1939-1939.

The royal city of Bela,
son of Beor;
king of Edom (Genesis 36:32 1 Chronicles 1:43)
The name may mean robbers den.
DINHABAH
may have been a name later given to a place in Africa possibly Libya.

[Genesis 36:33] AND BELA DIED, AND JOBAB THE SON OF ZERAH OF BOZRAH REIGNED IN
HIS STEAD.
[Genesis 36:34] AND JOBAB DIED, AND HUSHAM OF THE LAND OF TEMANI REIGNED IN HIS
STEAD.
TEMANI
was in northern Syria and northern Turkey. From this area people migrated to
Central Europe. Alexander the Great claimed descent from the
Temenu.
I would think that being descended from somebody like Alexander the Great would
be quite respectable. He was a great soldier, brave, ingenious and a truly
enlightened ruler of noble qualities who contributed much to world history.
[Genesis 36:35] AND HUSHAM DIED, AND HADAD THE SON OF BEDAD, WHO SMOTE MIDIAN
IN THE FIELD OF MOAB, REIGNED IN HIS STEAD: AND THE NAME OF HIS CITY WAS AVITH.
[Genesis 36:36] AND HADAD DIED, AND SAMLAH OF MASREKAH REIGNED IN HIS
STEAD.
[Genesis 36:37] AND SAMLAH DIED, AND SAUL OF REHOBOTH BY THE RIVER REIGNED IN
HIS STEAD.
"REHOBOTH BY THE RIVER" was on the
Euphrates in the North. Edom was all over the place with entities and ruling
dynasties established in many nations.

"And Samlah
died, and Saul of Rehoboth by the river reigned in his stead." Gen. 36:37.
# It is startling indeed to read that King Saul's capital city was "Rehoboth by
the river." This city is very far from Edom proper. It lay roughly 400 miles
north easterly, near the banks of the great River Euphrates and for years as
been identified with Rahabah,
situated twenty-eight miles below the juncture of the
Khabour
River River with the Euphrates. The Euphrates is often called in Scripture just
"the river" as reference through a concordance will amply prove.
# As already said, it is truly startling to learn that a king of Edom should
establish his capital 400 miles away from his own country! Clearly the
Edomite
kingdom had now spread out enormously north- eastwards to the Euphrates River,
(perhaps doing so under Samlah's
reign, brining Edom close to Assyria. (19) Possibly the business of further
conquests in this direction, or beyond the river, made it advisable for King
Saul (called Shaul
in I. Chronicles 1:48,) to set up the seat of his government so far from Edom
proper.
[Genesis 36:38] AND SAUL DIED, AND BAALHANAN THE SON OF ACHBOR REIGNED IN HIS
STEAD.
[Genesis 36:39] AND BAALHANAN THE SON OF ACHBOR DIED, AND HADAR REIGNED IN HIS
STEAD: AND THE NAME OF HIS CITY WAS PAU; AND HIS WIFE'S NAME WAS MEHETABEL, THE
DAUGHTER OF MATRED, THE DAUGHTER OF MEZAHAB.
[Genesis 36:40] AND THESE ARE THE NAMES OF THE DUKES THAT CAME OF ESAU,
ACCORDING TO THEIR FAMILIES, AFTER THEIR PLACES, BY THEIR NAMES; DUKE TIMNAH,
DUKE ALVAH, DUKE JETHETH,
[Genesis 36:41] DUKE AHOLIBAMAH, DUKE ELAH, DUKE PINON,
[Genesis 36:42] DUKE KENAZ, DUKE TEMAN, DUKE MIBZAR,
[Genesis 36:43] DUKE MAGDIEL, DUKE IRAM: THESE BE THE DUKES OF EDOM, ACCORDING
TO THEIR HABITATIONS IN THE LAND OF THEIR POSSESSION: HE IS ESAU THE FATHER OF
THE EDOMITES.
DUKE
MAGDIEL
was the real founder of Rome according to tradition.
