Dan had a numerous population.
The Tribe of Dan when it came out of Egypt with the rest of the Children of
Israel was, after Judah, the most populous of Israelite Tribes with 62,700
males between the ages of 20 and 60 apart from women, children, and the elderly
(Numbers 2:26).
Dan Was a Warrior!
The Commentator Rabbi Abraham Iben Ezra opined that Dan and Judah were the
greatest warrior tribes.
That is why when they marched forward Judah was in the front and Dan in the rear
(Iben Ezra Numbers 1:19).
Their task was to take the brunt of the battle and to protect the rest of
Israel.
Dan and Judah are Both Lions!
There were similarities between Dan and Judah.
Both were compared to a lion.
Genesis 49:
9 Judah is a lion's whelp;
From the prey, my son, you have gone up.
He bows down, he lies down as a lion;
And as a lion, who shall rouse him?
Deuteronomy 49:
22 And of Dan he said:
'Dan is a lion's whelp;
He shall leap from Bashan.'

Aholiab of the Tribe of Dan assisted Betzaleel of the Tribe of Judah in
building the Tabernacle in the Wilderness (Exodus 31:2-6).
Solomon from Judah and Hiram from Dan built the Temple (1-Kings 7:13).
Dan and Judah to Take Responsibility for
All Israel!
Dan and Judah both have a sense of National Responsibility and Noblesse Oblige
towards the rest of Israel (Targum Yehonatan on Genesis 49:18).
Who is the Messiah son of Joseph?
The future Messiah son of David and ruler of all Israel (Ezekiel 37) will
come from Judah. He will be preceded and assisted by the Messiah son of Joseph
from the Ten Tribes.
The Messiah son of Joseph is a descendant of Ephraim who will lead the Ten
Tribes in the End Times.
He will defeat the enemies of Israel.
He will also initiate the reconciliation of the Ten Tribes with Judah.
The Messiah son of Joseph represents more the physical aspects of redemption
whereas the Messiah son of David (from Judah) will initially concerned more with
the spiritual ones.
Complete Redemption will require the unification of the two aspects.

Rabbi Kook (Igorot 4:89) said that Dan through Samson represents the aspect of
physical strength sanctified for a higher purpose. Israel will have need of this
quality in the End Times.
Rachel gave Bilhah to Jacob. Dan was born (Genesis 30:3-7), and after that
Naphtali (Genesis 30:8).
In a sense, by virtue of Rachel giving Bilhah to Jacob and Dan being born,
Rachel eventually gave birth to Joseph (Genesis 30:23-24).
This parallels Dan being connected to the future appearance of the Messiah son
of Joseph.
Dan is highly materialistic. That is why Dan is often associated with Idolatry.
In the future Dan will use this materialistic streak of his in a positive
direction.
The Messiah son of Joseph represents materialistic liberation and power in
defeating the enemies of Israel.
Dan and Joseph will supplement each other in enabling the appearance of the
Messiah son of Joseph and all that is associated with it.
The Mother of the Messiah son of David
will Come from Dan!
The Messiah son of Joseph will prepare the way for the Messiah son of
David.
The future Messiah son of David will have a father from Judah and a mother from
Dan (Midrash Agada, Buber, on Genesis 49:9).

Merely Symbolic!
The idea of a Messiah son of Joseph (in addition to a Messiah son of David)
though based on the Bible is primarily a development of later Rabbinical
Thought.
Belief in the Messiah son of David is a Foundation of Scripture and is to be
taken literally.

On the other hand, understandings of Prophecy and predictions concerning the
Messiah son of Joseph, while probably also concerning a real person, may be
taken in a symbolic sense.
Alternatively they may be understood as referring to a specific person who will
appear in the future as well as being representative of an Historical Process.
This is how we understand it.
The present-day assistance first Britain and then the USA (Joseph) gave to help
establish and stabilize the State of Israel and the ingathering of Jewish Exiles
in one aspect of the Messiah son of Joseph in the symbolic sense.
This is an ongoing process, aspects of which are developing before our eyes, and
within each one of us!
