The treatment of Native Americans by whites was obviously appalling and shameful, but it simply cannot be compared with the Nazi Holocaust. The total population of Indians in the USA probably declined from about 2 million in 1776 to about 350,000 in 1900 (it is now about 4 million). But the number of Indians killed by whites has been reliably estimated at no more than 53,500 during the period 1775- 1894 (with 19,000 whites killed by Indians). The rest of the decline was due to the introduction of virulent diseases to which Indians had no immunity, the disappearance of buffalo stock, societal depression, alcoholism, and "disappearance" by being absorbed by intermarriage with whites and blacks. Much the same thing happened to Australian Aborigines and other indigenous peoples- there was certainly no deliberate policy of genocide, however unfairly Indians were treated. As to the slave trade, the whole point was to keep slaves alive, not kill them. It is generally estimated that about 15 per cent of slaves died on the "Middle Passage." African slaves were almost invariably captured and sold to Europeans by other African tribes and their chiefs. European slave traders never ventured inland or away from the coast- inland they were likely to die of malaria etc. or be killed.

Bill is more or less right in principle, but his numbers for Indians killed
by whites is way too low. For the Five Civilized Tribes alone, each lost
1/4-1/3 of their total population during or as a consequence of their
forced migration (ethnic cleansing) of the 1830s-40s. Just because they
weren't shot doesn't mean they weren't killed -- just as a Jew who "died"
of typhus in Theresienstadt was killed by the Nazis.
