It is generally believed that about 25,000 Jews survived the War in Germany, mainly those married to "Aryans," with another 8000 or so alive in Austria. Many more survived in other countries, especially Romania, Bulgaria, and France. The number of Jews who survived in Poland must have been very small, although perhaps up to 400,000 were still alive in Russia, as slave labourers, etc. The Nazis never deported the Jews of Budapest, so over 100,000 were alive at the end of the War. Some survival rates are rather strange- over half of Belgian Jewry survived, with 63 per cent of the Jews of Brussels still alive, but 104,000 out of 140,000 Dutch Jews perished. There were peculiar local reasosn for these differences, especially the relative brutality of the SS and the ability of semi-independent but pro-Nazi governments to protect their Jews.
