2. Experiences of Jewish Refugees in Britain and the USA in Holocaust Period

emigration (Loewy)

...I have known a fair set of people with my background and they had much the same behaviour, values, etc. There were many suicides among refugees. We had fled for our lives from the Nazis, managed to get to England where we were treated like human beings but---for a number of reasons---could not stay in England. Landing in the USA, however and especially after living in England, was not exactly a welcome. When we landed in England after a harrowing trip, the immigration official looked at my father's passport, embraced him and said "Welcome to England. You are now safe." In New York it was a bit different. They first processed Americans (ok, no complaint). Other passengers were divided into "legitimate foreigners" and "Jews". No one was allowed to leave until all were processed. In transit two ladies had delivered two children. Now they started with harassment. Why were the baby's without papers? they started
to say that they could not admit Illegal aliens. We had started at about 07:30 AM and it was now close to seven:thirty. At 1930 the circle of why they had no papers, etc. and they would be sent to Germany ended when the Dutch Captain in full uniform came in and told them "these children were delivered on my ship which is considered Dutch territory. Therefore, they are subjects of her majesty the Queen. Should there be more delay I will call Washington and have the ambassador call the pertinent authorities." It is remarkable how they suddenly understood. At that time NY had many "American Nazis". It was soon made obvious that we were grudgingly "Tolerated" and certainly not welcome.
