1. Phoenicia team navigate Cape of Good Hope
http://www.dorsetecho.co.uk/news/5062357.Phoenicia_team_navigate_Cape_of_Good_Hope/
By Laura Kitching '

A PRIMITIVE sailing venture being led by a Dorset adventurer has overcome its biggest challenge yet.

A team of 15 international sailors have breathed a sigh of relief as they successfully completed one of the toughest stretches of a 17,000-mile voyage around Africa ' navigating the Cape of Good Hope.

This stretch of coastline is a considerable challenge in any modern sailing yacht, but the Phoenicia team managed it in a replica 600 BC Phoenician wooden ship.

Expedition leader Philip Beale, who conceived the project from his base at East Chaldon, near Lulworth, had described it as the 'critical point in the expedition'.

He said: 'It is undoubtedly one of the most dangerous stretches of coastline in the world, and the Phoenicia expedition team have made history by showing incredible seamanship and courage in gale force winds, waves seven meters high and a main sail torn in two before their eyes.

'But these challenges have not deterred the crew as they rounded the Cape during the early hours of Thursday, March 4.'

The ship is now alongside at the North Wharf of the V&A Waterfront in Cape Town where it has been invited to berth alongside other prestigious sailors including Dilip Donde, India's first solo circumnavigator, and a team of sailors onboard 'Majan' ' a state of the art Arabian 100 Trimaran.

Their stop in Cape Town has included a press conference and interviews, and they opened Phoenicia up to public visits over the course of the visit.
The Phoenician Ship Expedition has brought together sailors and adventurers from across the globe as part of the crew.

The expedition launched from Syria in summer 2008, and over the past 18 months an international crew, of up to 16 people on any one leg, have battled against the elements to re-trace the Phoenicians ancient route around Africa.

2. The Peopling of Anglo-Saxon Britain: Ethnic Percentages
Some interesting Points

Angles in Yorkshire from Southern Denmark and Southern Norway!

In the meantime, my own interpretation (as a Chemist of 25 years experience) is this:
We have a sample of skeletons from the culturally (artefactual/burial rite) Anglian
cemetary of late 5th/6th c. West Heslerton of two dozen individuals. Four contain
Oxygen tooth enamel which can only have originated in Southern Denmark (the
traditional place-of-origin of Angles). This matches the oldest artefacts found in this
cemetery, such as swords of a style which are known to come from Schlezwig. Thus
we can infer that the earliest Angles to colonize West-Heslerton come from here.
The half of the sample who have Oxygen tooth enamel figures in the range marked
yellow in the map probably do not originate in Cumbria, but Southern Norway.
This matches the jewellery artefacts found in the graves, which can be seen to be
typical from both Norway & Denmark for this time. Both the Danish & Norwegian
individuals represent 1st generation imigrants (whether you want to call them invaders
or something else). Lastly, we have a third of the sample which have isotopes in
their teeth that match the local area (Yorkshire). This does not, of course, in any
way imply they are native Britons, only that they are the 2nd/3rd generation offspring
of those original Anglian colonizers. And considering that they are included in those
graves which share Anglian grave-goods/burial orientation, there is no reason to think
that they were anything other than culturally Anglian, just like their parents.

I would also refer the list to Sir Walter Bodmer's 'Face Of Britain' genetic survey
(conducted between 2006 & 2009) which found conclusively that there is a strong
correlation between geography and genetic origin across England & Wales. While
blood & tissue types in the West (Cornwall, Wales - yes, and Cumbria!) can be
seen to be of more ancient 'Celtic' stock, the East coast of England is roughly
three-quarters Scandinavian to only one part native. Overall, the population of England
& Wales comes out to almost exactly 50:50 Celtic/Anglo-Saxon as measured by their
genetic markers. Which certainly agrees with the earlier studies by Weale etc (also
featured in 'Britain AD') which suggest a 50%+ replacement of native genes. Which
was laughed at, at the time it was published, though it doesn't look so silly now. And
if we take the mean estimate of a population of England & Wales c. 400 as 4 million,
then 50% of that is... Well, you do the maths, we do the pizza.
