1. Jay: The Donald Patten Solution for the Deluge
Re: BAMBINO no. 7
#3. Was the Deluge World-Wide?

Shalom Yair:

The trouble with Darwinism, re the evolution of man, is that it is racist.  Thus, the bushman of Australia and the African slaves of Europe and America were considered, by some Christians in the1850s, as less human than the white man.  Some Christians have justified slavery on the grounds that the "mark of Cain" was a change of his skin color from white to black.  Then in the episode of the drunken Noah, after he had been discovered "naked" by his son Ham, Canaan was cursed and his descendants were prophesied to become slaves to the descendants of Shem (a white man).  I have just a kindergarten understanding of Hebrew, yet it is plain to me that Cain and Canaan, in Hebrew, are not even close in spelling, even if the English spellings and pronunciations are similar.

As for your Creationist website, I believe your choice was unfortunate.
I will look at this more closely, however I sense sensationalism.  If you google "Donald Patten", you will find information that is more scientific, even if based on speculation.  Donald Patten's speculation of the Flood, which makes sense to me, is that a planet sized asteroid with an icy ring system, like Saturn, made a close encounter with the earth and caused catastrophic tides plus earthquakes which resulted in the major mountain ranges of North America, the Himalayas, &c,   This asteroid also dumped lots of ice onto the northern and southern hemispheres (the Ice Age).   Evidence from one of your website references, about mammoth tusks being peppered with meteoric iron-nickel particles suggests that these particles were the centers of ice pellets, which catastrophically bombarded the earth at the time of Noah, and smothered and froze the mammoths of Siberia and Alaska, just as a mountain avalanche can smother and quick freeze a skier or mountaineer.

2. Translation of Names in Genesis ch.5

Shalom,

Could you take some time to translate the significance of the first prophets of G-d beginning with :
Adam means ?man? (ish)
Seth:
Cainan:
Mahalaleel:
Jaradh:
Enoch:
Methuselah:
Lamech:
Noah:

I was told those names mean something and I would be very interested in the significance.
Thank you for your time,
Claude the Ephraimite.

Answer:
Adam means "man".
Adam is related to
Adamah meaning "earth".
A related word could be "Edom" meaning "red" but also perhaps connoting "brown".
"
Ish" also means "man" and is perhaps cognate with "Aesh" meaning "fire".
Seth means "establish, set up, foundation". It may be related to the English words "set" and "sit".
"
Cainan" should be transliterated "Kainan" and perhaps connotes "possession, settlement".
"
Mahalaleel"  looks like a simple rendering "Praise God" from the roots "HLL" (praise) and El (God).
Jaradh  should be transliterated  "Yered" and connotes "descent, go down" or "rule over"
from root "RD" and may be related to the English "ride" .
Enoch in Hebrew is closer to "
Chanoch" or Henoch" and connotes "inaugurate, begin, educate, consecrate".
Methuselah is a difficult name. It may be close to
Matu" meaning "people" and "shelach" meaning send.
The name could mean "Emissary of the People" or it could have quite a different meaning.
Names can be difficult because they do not always follow accepted grammatical laws.
"
Lamech" has no obvious meaning that springs to mind at present.
S.R. Hirsch says it means "Leader of Men".
Noah means "rest" or "comfort".
